Mark Cavendish has pulled out of the Tour de France following a crash in the final kilometre of the opening stage, his team Omega Pharma-Quick Step have confirmed.

Cavendish, who has won 25 Tour de France stages, was hoping to end the opening day in the yellow jersey by clinching victory in a sprint finish to Harrogate but he suffered a nasty fall after tangling with the Australian Simon Gerrans 250 metres from the finish line.

The Manx sprinter was clearly in pain following the crash, clutching his right shoulder, and while he did gingerly finish the stage, Omega Pharma-Quick Step revealed he would take no further part in the 2014 race.

'@MarkCavendish will not start Stage 2 today. More information will be provided later,' tweeted the Omega Pharma-Quick Step team, before confirming that he will speak to the media before the start of Sunday's second stage, from York to Sheffield.
