Deadly cargo plane crash in Birmingham, Ala.

Earlier, UPS spokesman Jeff Wafford said there were two crew members aboard the plane, and Bell said the two crewmembers on board were the pilot and the co-pilot. Witnesses said there were as many as five explosions in the hour since the Airbus A300 plane crashed around 5 a.m. CDT on approach to the airport. Reporter Rick Jackson of CBS Birmingham affiliate WIAT-TV reported on "CBS This Morning" on the phone from near the crash site that the plane split in half from the impact. A residential area is about two blocks away from the crash site, Jackson reported. A resident walking his dog told Jackson that he was "blessed" that the plane didn't crash in the neighborhood. The Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement to CBS News that the plane was en route from Louisville, Ky. Toni Herrera-Bast, a spokeswoman for Birmingham's airport authority, said the plane crashed in "open land" she described as a grassy field on the outskirts of Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport. "The plane is in several sections," said Bell, who was briefed on the situation by the city's fire chief. "There were two to three small explosions, but we think that was related to the aviation fuel." Previously, a UPS cargo plane crashed on Sept. 3, 2010, in the United Arab Emirates, just outside Dubai. Both pilots were killed. Authorities there blamed the crash on its load of between 80,000 to 90,000 lithium batteries, which are sensitive to temperature. Edmonson said Ahmed's two hostages suffered gunshot wounds to the upper body. They were taken from the scene in critical condition. Paxton added that Ahmed was a paranoid schizophrenic and that he had made a number of demands, including removing a device from his head so he could stop hearing voices. He added that investigators were also convinced that the situation was not a bank robbery attempt but a planned attack. They found notes in Ahmed's apartment indicating his intentions, he said. "He was mad at people that he said were mean to him," Edmonson added. "He had voices in his head." Egypt forces launch bloody seige to clear pro

The Muslim Brotherhood, the well-organized Islamist group which propelled Morsi into office and continues to demand his reinstatement, said in a statement that at least 60 people were killed and dozens injured in the attack on the larger of the two protest camps, at the Rabaah al-Adawiya mosque in the eastern Cairo district of Nasr City. The state news agency said only that two members of the security forces were killed by gunfire. CBS News' Alex Ortiz said police and army personnel had blocked every road into the area around the Rabaah camp, and pro-Morsi demonstrators were clashing with police outside the cordoned-off area, too. He said huge plumes of black smoke were rising over the camp and continuing automatic gunfire could be heard coming from the site. Eventually Ortiz made it into a field hospital inside the cordoned-off area around the mosque, where he saw at least eight bodies of people killed from gunshot wounds to the head and chest. The youngest fatality seen by Ortiz appeared to be no more than 13 years of age. Ortiz reported, however, that field hospital building is five stories high, and there were dead and wounded on every floor which he could not see. The stairs and floors were covered with blood and the sound of automatic gunfire from outside was nonstop. Prominent Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohammed al-Biltagi told the Al Jazeera television network that as many as 300 people had been killed in the crackdown on the Rabaah camp, calling it a "crime against humanity." "I urge all the Egyptians to take to the streets and protest against the violent break-up of the sit-ins," said al-Biltagi. "By Allah, I have seen toddlers being killed in front of their mothers." There was no official word on casualties among the protesters in either camp. State television said only that two security force members were killed. Sam Kiley, a veteran war correspondent for CBS News partner network Sky News, reported from the Rabaah camp that "live fire seems to be principle method being used to clear the area," adding that he had seen many dead, but that death tolls being reported were unlikely reliable because the "numbers are escalating constantly." <img src="http://i.i.cbsi.com/cnwk.1d/i/tim2/2013/08/11/en_0811_Ward_220x157.jpg"/> The Interior Ministry, which is in charge of police, warned in a statement that the forces would deal firmly with protesters acting "irresponsibly" and said it would guarantee safe passage to those who want to leave the sites. Video shot by army or police helicopters and broadcast by State TV showed what the government claimed were Muslim Brotherhood gunman firing at security forces from behind a sandbag barricade. The video could not be independently verified. A former government aide who's been attending the Nasr City protest every day told CBS News that security forces took out a stolen State TV satellite truck first with live ammunition, then began firing volleys of tear gas into the camp. The simultaneous actions by the Egyptian forces -- at the pro-Morsi encampment in Nasr City and at the site outside the main campus of Cairo University on the other side of the capital -- began around 7 a.m. local time. Helicopters hovered over the two sites. Regional television networks were showing images of collapsed tents and burning tires at both sites, with ambulances on standby at the scene. They were also showing protesters being arrested and led away by the troops. There were reports that the clashes had spread to other Egyptian cities, suggesting police and pro-Morsi protesters were facing off in Giza, Alexandria, Assiut and al-Minya. Hannah Anderson seems to have gone online barely 48 hours after her rescue Saturday and started fielding hundreds of questions through a social media site. Many were typical teenage fare -- she likes singer Justin Bieber and her favorite color is pink - but the postings also answered queries about how she was kidnapped, how she survived captivity and how she is dealing with the deaths of her mother and brother. The postings don't say whether she was raped during her ordeal, reports CBS News correspondent Ben Tracy. The postings started Monday night, hours after her father publicly requested that the family be allowed to grieve and heal in private. Brett Anderson didn't respond to a text message seeking comment about his daughter postings, which continued into Tuesday evening. Police have said little about their investigation. Jan Caldwell, a spokeswoman for the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, said authorities are aware of the online comments but couldn't confirm the account is Hannah's. Tracy says, "We reached out to both Anderson's family and the San Diego Sheriff's Department. Neither denied that this online account is hers. It appears to be authentic because Anderson posted pictures of herself and had conversations before she was kidnapped." <img src="http://i.i.cbsi.com/cnwk.1d/i/tim2/2013/08/13/CTM_0813_HannahAndeson_220x157.jpg"/> The postings appear on the ask.fm social-networking site account for "Hannahbanana722" of Lakeside, the San Diego County community where the teen lived with her mother and brother. At one point during the lengthy series of posts, a questioner asked Hannah to post a photo and she complied. The image shows her with a wide smile. Dawn MacNabb, whose son, Alan, is one of Hannah's closest friends, confirmed the postings were by the teen. Alan spoke on the phone with Hannah on Tuesday and urged her to delete some of the postings, MacNabb said. "He said she was going to, but I don't know if she will," she said. Anderson declined interview requests from news organizations that posted to her account. She was kidnapped Aug. 4 by James Lee DiMaggio, 40, her father's best friend who was like an uncle to her and her brother, Ethan. DiMaggio had invited the children and their mother, Christina Anderson, 44, to his house in Boulevard, a rural town 65 miles east of San Diego. "He told us he was losing his house because of money issues so we went up there one last time to support him, and to have fun riding go karts up there but he tricked us," Anderson wrote. Anderson said DiMaggio tied up his mother and brother in his garage. Their bodies were found after a fire destroyed the home. She said she didn't know they had died until an FBI agent told her at the hospital after rescue Saturday. "I wish I could go back in time and risk my life to try and save theirs. I will never forgive myself for not trying harder to save them," she wrote. <img src="http://i.i.cbsi.com/cnwk.1d/i/tim2/2013/08/11/en_0811_FULL_220x157.jpg"/> Anderson said she "basically" stayed awake for six straight days and DiMaggio ignored her requests for food. She couldn't try to escape because DiMaggio had a gun and "threatened to kill me and anyone who tried to help." Anderson said she was too frightened to ask for help when four horseback riders encountered the pair in the remote wilderness on Wednesday. The riders didn't report the sightings to police until the next day, after returning home and learning about the massive search spanning much of the western United States and parts of Canada and Mexico. "I had to act calm I didn't want them to get hurt. I was scared that he would kill them," she wrote. The girl said DiMaggio threatened to kill her if she didn't help hide his blue Nissan Versa with tree branches. Authorities discovered the car Friday, leading to her rescue the following day. Asked if she would have preferred DiMaggio got a lifetime prison sentence instead of being killed by FBI agents, she said, "He deserved what he got." Anderson acknowledged being uncomfortable around DiMaggio even before the abduction, saying he once told her that he was drawn to her. "He said it was more like a family crush like he had feelings as in he wanted nothing bad to happen to me," she wrote. She said she didn't tell her parents because DiMaggio was his father's best friend "and I didn't want to ruin anything between them." On Monday, Anderson had her nails done -- pink for her mother and blue for her brother. She said she anticipates returning to El Capitan High School in the east San Diego suburb of Lakeside for her junior year. She said she was still in shock. When one commenter said her responses appeared to lack emotion, she wrote, "I'm trying to stay strong. You don't know I could be crying answering these questions at the moment." Therapists say Anderson faces a long recovery, but support from family and friends can help her lead a happy, productive life. Counselors may focus on acknowledging her trauma but not letting it control decisions. Her father has told at least two people he planned to move with Hannah to Tennessee, where he lives. Moving would be a father's "very normal reaction," said Jessica Donohue-Dioh, a social work instructor at Xavier University in Cincinnati. A spokesman for Unamid, a joint African Union-United Nations mission, said the incident happened near the mission's base at Manawashi, north of Nyala. Unamid did not specify how the victims had died, or their nationalities, but it happened in an area controlled by Tanzanian troops. More than 16,000 Unamid troops are currently based in Darfur. The mission began in 2007, with a mandate to protected civilians. Spokesman Christopher Cycmanick told the AFP news agency the incident happened as the peacekeepers were about 25km (16 miles) west from a second Unamid base at Khar Abeche They had been moving between the sites at the time, he said, without giving further details. The UN estimates that more than 300,000 people have died in Darfur, mostly from disease, since rebels took up arms in 2003 against the Khartoum government. </div>

Egypt announces criminal investigation of Mursi

The public prosecutor's office issued a statement saying it had received complaints against Mursi, eight other named Islamist figures including top Brotherhood leader Mohamed Badie, and others it did not identify. The complaints are a first step in the criminal process, allowing prosecutors to begin an investigation that can lead to charges. Announcing the step was unusual: typically prosecutors wait until charges are filed before making public statements. VIGIL The Brotherhood, which has maintained a vigil near a Cairo mosque since before the army removed Mursi on July 3, has said it will not leave the streets until he is restored to power. The military says it deposed Mursi in a justified response to popular demand after millions of people demonstrated against him. The Brotherhood says it was a coup that reversed democracy. Turmoil in the most populous Arab state has alarmed Western donors. Egypt sits astride the Suez Canal and has a strategically important peace treaty with Israel. Large crowds of Brotherhood supporters finally dispersed before dawn on Saturday after marching through the streets into the early hours holding up pictures of Mursi at traffic lights. Tens of thousands had turned out on Friday for what the Brotherhood called a "day of marching on". Mursi's opponents say those demonstrations are still much smaller than the ones that brought him down. However, the Brotherhood has shown its organizational muscle by keeping its vigil running into a third week and bringing in coach loads of supporters from the provinces during the Ramadan fasting month. At one stage overnight, demonstrators stood behind barbed wire shouting at soldiers a few dozen meters (yards) away. "I am here to say 'no' to the military coup and 'yes' to Mursi, who I see as my legitimate president," said Ahmed Adel, a 22-year-old student, in downtown Cairo. Senior Brotherhood figure Essam El-Erian, one of those who faces arrest, called on his Facebook page for more demonstrations on Monday. "Egypt decides through the ballot box, through protests, mass marches and peaceful sit-ins," he said. BLOODY WEEK Friday's demonstration passed off peacefully, in contrast to deadly violence a week earlier when 35 people were killed in running battles between pro- and anti-Mursi demonstrators. On Monday, 57 people were killed in clashes between the army and Mursi supporters near a Cairo barracks. The army says it was responding to an attack by terrorists; the Brotherhood says its partisans were massacred. The United States refuses to say whether it considers the army takeover a "coup", which under U.S. law would require it to cut off aid including $1.3 billion a year in military support. In recent days it has described Mursi's rule as undemocratic because of the vast popular protests against him, but also urged the authorities to release him and stop detaining his followers. Its wavering position has infuriated both sides. Turmoil since a popular uprising toppled president Hosni Mubarak in 2011 has wrecked Egypt's economy, scaring away tourists and investors, draining hard currency reserves and making it difficult to import food and fuel, which the government distributes at heavily subsidized prices. Rich Gulf Arab states Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait, happy at the overthrow of the Brotherhood, have offered Egypt $12 billion in cash, loans and fuel. State news agency MENA said a shipment of 70,000 tons of diesel arrived in Alexandria on Saturday from Turkey and Sweden. Egypt's interim authorities have set out a "road map" to restore full civilian rule, setting out plans for a new constitution and parliamentary elections in about six months, to be followed by a presidential vote. A judge has been named interim president and a liberal economist, Hazem el-Beblawi, has been appointed prime minister. He is trying to cobble together a cabinet likely to be made up mainly of technocrats and liberals, without offending a large ultra-orthodox Islamist group that broke with the Brotherhood to accept the military takeover. Beblawi told Reuters on Saturday he expected to name the cabinet within two days. Egypt's crisis has raised fears over security in the lawless Sinai peninsula bordering Israel and the Palestinian Gaza Strip, where militants attack security forces checkpoints almost daily. The headline in the state-run Al Gomhuria newspaper read: "Sinai Purification Operation within Days", referring to a possible army offensive against militants in the region. But a senior army officer, who asked not to be named, said this was unlikely to take place immediately because forces are now focused on keeping the peace during political turmoil. Security sources said on Saturday a Palestinian had been arrested in Egypt on suspicion of carrying out attacks on a natural gas pipeline. Matt Baggott: Belfast riots shameful and disgraceful

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'>Northern Ireland's chief constable has described the rioting in Belfast which injured 32 police officers as "shameful and disgraceful". MP Nigel Dodds was also injured during the six hours disturbances on Friday. Clashes developed when police enforced a ban on an Orange Order march. The order called for widespread demonstrations after marchers were banned from a stretch of road that separates loyalist and nationalist communities. It later said it was suspending its protest. Mr Baggott said another 400 police officers would arrive from the UK on Saturday to provide assistance to police officers in Northern Ireland. Secretary of State Theresa Villiers said she "utterly condemned" the rioting. "Attacks on the police are completely unacceptable and there can be no justification for this kind of behaviour," she said. "This sort of behaviour does nothing to promote 'Britishness' or the pro-union cause. Rather it undermines it in the eyes of the overwhelming majority of people here in Northern Ireland and in the rest of the UK." She said it was "right" that the Orange Order had suspended its protests called for the organisation to "call them off completely". "It is the clear responsibility of everyone who has influence, including the Orange Order, community leaders and politicians, to do what they can to calm the situation. We need temperate language over coming days," she added. Many families with children were caught up in the violence in the north of the city. Petrol bombs, bricks and fireworks were thrown at the police who responded with water cannon and fired 20 plastic baton rounds. North Belfast MP Mr Dodds was knocked unconscious during the riot and taken away in an ambulance. The trouble started when the police blocked a road to enforce a determination made by the Parades Commission, preventing Orangemen from passing Ardoyne on the return route of their annual 12 July march. The area has seen republican rioting in recent years when the parade was allowed to pass. The Orange Order had called for sustained protests at the decision but has since reeled back from that position. The BBC's Andy Martin in Belfast said the fear of the police was that the "genie may already be out of the bottle". Trouble broke out when the parade was stopped on the Woodvale Road. Mr Dodds was hit by a missile thrown by loyalists at the junction of Woodvale Road and Woodvale Parade. "He was unlucky because he was also hit by water cannon as I was trying to administer first aid and he got soaked," he added. Mr Dodds was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast. He was treated and has since been discharged. Water cannon and baton rounds were used after a sustained attack on police in north Belfast. Police were attacked with ceremonial swords as well as missiles. Later on Friday night, police were attacked with petrol bombs on the Woodvale Road. Petrol bombs The Parades Commission ruling stopped Orange Order lodges from walking on a stretch of road in north Belfast that separates loyalist and nationalist communities. Trouble also broke out on the Newtownards Road in east Belfast with petrol bombs being thrown at police lines. Earlier, missiles had been thrown as a parade passed St Matthew's Catholic church. Petrol bombs, bricks and bottles thrown were thrown, and water cannon was used by police, in both north and east Belfast. The marching season in Northern Ireland is a period of events from April to August, with the highpoint on 12 July when Orangemen march to commemorate William of Orange's victory over the Catholic King James II at the Battle of the Boyne in Ireland in 1690. William III is revered by the order as a champion of his faith. The Orange Order commemorate his victory in their annual parades. Many Catholics see the marches as triumphalist and sectarian with some traditional Orange routes passing through or past areas occupied mainly by Catholics and nationalists. Launching a report on the work of the now abolished UK Border Agency, Labour MP Keith Vaz, chair of the Commons home affairs select committee, warns that reforms of the organisation need to go beyond merely "rebranding". In taking evidence about UKBA's work last year, the committee discovered an additional 190,000 cases in a "temporary and permanent migration pool". Vaz said: "The backlog of cases has now hit a staggering half a million people. This could fill Wembley stadium to capacity six times over. It has risen by 56% in just three months. At the current rate it will take 37 years to clear and the Home Office cannot confirm that this is the last of the backlogs." The MP for Leicester East added: " Theresa May described the UK Border Agency as 'closed, secretive and defensive'. However, despite abolition, nothing appears to have changed apart from the name. If people at the top are not replaced, this will only be an exercise in rebranding, as has happened in previous reincarnations. There should be no more bonuses paid to any senior Home Office managers until the backlogs are cleared. "In evidence, the committee were told the immigration service would never be fixed. This is astonishing, since reducing immigration is a priority of this government. What the immigration service needs desperately is stability, the resources to clear the backlogs and a wholesale change in culture." The total of unresolved cases is said to stand at 502,462. Of those, more than 190,000 are deemed to be in the "migration refusal pool'' - those who have had their applications turned down. Many may have left Britain. The report, published on Saturday, acknowledges that UKBA has had a "troubled history" but questions how ministers intend to prevent its problems "outliving its demise". "The newly appointed directors general must have the ability and resources necessary to implement this change. The Home Office should outline exactly how they propose to bring about this change in culture." In March, May announced that UKBA was to be abolished. She told MPs that the agency "struggles with the volume of its casework" and that the number of illegal immigrants removed does not keep up with "the number of people who are here illegally". Sarah Rapson, the official temporarily in charge of visas and immigration pending the reorganisation, in effect told the committee that the problem would never be solved. The report says: "Asked if she thought the Immigration Service would ever be fixed she said: 'I don't think so'. "The committee were surprised by this revelation. Although we welcome Ms Rapson's honesty, the committee are concerned that the person tasked with 'fixing' the agency does not think the job will ever be complete. "We are concerned this is an admission that Ms Rapson does not have the resources necessary to 'fix' the service." The Home Office should reveal the full scale of the backlog so it can apportion the funds necessary, the report says. </div>

Barely a week after the National Asset Management Agency (NAMA) awarded British conglomerate Serco a contract to help manage loans with a face value of nearly €2bn, the British government has accused the company of overcharging the British state by millions of pounds. In the UK, Serco, along with the security giant G4S, are accused of billing the government there for electronically tagging prisoners that did not exist. Between them, they are accused of overcharging by as much as £50m (€57m). As part of the privatisation of Britain's prison service, Serco has a contract to run "tagging schemes" where offenders have to wear an electronic tag when they are released from prison. The tags allow authorities to track the wearer, and it is an offence to tamper with the tag. Now, however, it has been alleged that Serco had been charging the government for tagging prisoners who were dead, had left the country, or did not have to be wear one. Britain's ministry of justice sources said although they typically had 15,000 offenders on a tag at any one time G4S and Serco had been charging them for 18,000 - meaning one in six of the charges was spurious. UK justice secretary Chris Grayling described the allegations as a "wholly indefensible and unacceptable state of affairs". The allegations come barely eight days after NAMA awarded a contract to Serco and Australian firm Pepper to "service" or manage a loan book with a nominal value of €1.8bn. The true value of those loans is likely to be significantly lower. After the alleged fraud at the prisoner-tagging operation was uncovered, Serco said the investigation had highlighted "matters of potential concern in relation to billing practices". The company said it was co-operating with the investigation and will repay any amount agreed to be due. "Given this investigation, Serco has decided to withdraw from the re-tendering process for the electronic monitoring service," Serco said. The company is the sole bidder for another prison contract in the UK, but its success or otherwise will depend on the results of a government investigation into these allegations. Company chief executive Christopher Hyman said he was "deeply concerned" at the allegations and was taking them "extremely seriously". Tipton mosque blast was 'terrorist attack', say police

The blast happened on a disused railway line near Binfield Street in Tipton in the West Midlands at about 13:00 BST. A nearby shopkeeper said: "I did tell the police there to evacuate the area, please for god's sake - there were nails all over the place." Counter terrorism officers were called in and the surrounding area was closed off for several hours. <img src="http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/68706000/jpg/_68706050_68706049.jpg"/> 'Tipton Taliban' tag The mosque is the central place of worship for Tipton's long-established Muslim community including three men from the area who were captured in Afghanistan in 2002 and taken to Guantanamo Bay. Ruhal Ahmed, Asif Iqbal, both 22 at the time, and 26-year-old Shafiq Rasul were dubbed the "Tipton Taliban" and were held at the US camp in Cuba for two years. Shopkeeper Sadarat Khan said he was coming out of a local chemist when he heard a "bomb blast". "They [the police] didn't seem to be bothered too much... It took them about 40 minutes to evacuate the place," he said. Analysis <img src="http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/68701000/jpg/_68701621_de13-1.jpg"/> Witnesses said they heard a loud bang shortly after 13:00 BST and there were some reports of it being heard up to half a mile away. Many of the roads in the area have been shut by the police and lots of people are confused about what's happened. This is a predominantly British Pakistani neighbourhood in an area of mainly Victorian back-to-backs. People are understandably nervous this evening after what happened. I've seen uniformed police officers door knocking, asking people what they've seen. It's a sunny evening - people are out on the streets and discussing what they've witnessed. "People were terrified and very scared and shaken." BBC reporters at the scene were told prayers at the mosque were usually held at 13:00, but had been moved back an hour because of Ramadan. Resident Raja Khan was about 50m away when he heard the blast and said a device was found on a wall on the disused railway line at the back of the mosque. He said: "A few kids came out shouting, 'bomb, bomb'. There were branches that came off trees all over the place." He said he went to the mosque fearing there would be casualties. "If it had been when prayers were going on there would've been 300 to 400 people there. There were about 22 to 25 people I think at the time. "People are terrified for their kids, myself included." Asst Ch Con Gareth Cann said whoever was responsible "wanted to cause serious harm". "I can't say for sure it was directed at the mosque, but from what we've seen this seems to be the most likely option," he said. Minor damage was caused to a window of a nearby house, he said. A counter terrorism investigation has been started, the force confirmed. It is understood the explosion centred on an embankment near a disused rail line running behind the mosque. In a joint statement, the board of trustees and management committee of the Kanz Ul Iman Masjid mosque said: "We express our deep shock and utter dismay regarding the incident that has occurred this afternoon. "On behalf of the local community, we condemn this senseless and mindless act. It's a blessing from God that thankfully no-one was injured in the blast. 'Day of funeral' "We call for calm and strongly urge the community not to let this incident divide us and cause disharmony. "We stand united, stand together in the aftermath of this mindless act." Police lifted most of their cordons at about 21:00 BST but said Binfield Street was likely to remain closed overnight on Friday. Officers gave bottles of water to residents with young children who gathered along Dudley Port in Tipton during the afternoon. The Obama administration is continuing to evaluate the events which happened in Egypt last week. Massive US military aid to Cairo would legally have to be cut if the removal of the Islamist leader is determined by Washington to have been a coup. They are charged with inciting Monday's deadly violence in the capital, in which more than 50 Brotherhood supporters, a soldier and two policemen died. The Brotherhood says the army fired on peaceful demonstrators and it is accusing the interim authorities of a cover up. The military, however, says soldiers acted in self-defence after being attacked by armed assailants. Once the new parliament convenes, elections will be called to appoint a new president. The Brotherhood has rejected the transition plan, and its political wing - the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) - has said it will turn down a post in the cabinet being formed by the interim Prime Minister Hazem al-Beblawi. The father of one had served in Afghanistan and was attached to the regimental recruiting team when he was murdered in broad daylight in an attack that shocked the nation. His funeral on Friday is expected to be attended by hundreds of people. Bury has strong links with Fusilier Rigby's regiment, whose roots go back to the Lancashire Fusiliers, based in Bury, just two miles from the soldier's home town of Middleton.
