Now perhaps I'm reading into this too much, but Rovell does say there haven't been 'substantive discussions.' Does that mean there have been discussions, just not ones that are leading to anything for the time being?
In snuffing out any chance of the initial Space Jam 2 news being correct, he also opened the door for a positive update in the future.

It is with deep regret that I must inform you that we have been tricked.
According to ESPN's Brian Windhorst, LeBron James' camp is denying that a Space Jam 2 is in the works:

We'll always have the few hours in which we believed such a project was happening. We can remember those dreams of LeBron being pulled down a hole on the golf course and into a magical world to meet Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck.
But on the slight chance that Windhorst's sources are just denying the report for now and will reveal that it's true at a later date, please join me in crossing your fingers and hoping for the possibility of production with every fiber of your being.

In 1996, the original Space Jam came to the big screen, starring none other than Michael Jordan.
If you're like me, you grew up watching the movie over and over, memorizing quotes, singing along and getting excited every time His Airness stepped onto the court to take down the Monstars.

Soon enough, we'll have a new movie to capture the attention of generations of fans: Space Jam 2.
According to Deadline.com's Anita Busch (h/t Deadspin), a new superstar will be teaming up with Bugs Bunny:
Broadcasting veteran Dick Ebersol's sons have come on board to develop the sequel to 1996 animated/live-action hit Space Jam as a starring vehicle for James, the Miami Heat star who broke his nose during last night's game against the Oklahoma City when the Thunder's Serge Ibaka got him in the face after a dunk.
LeBron James has spent his entire career chasing after M.J., and he's not exactly breaking that trend now. But who cares? It's Space Jam 2!
'So, this looks like it's happening, and that is FANTASTIC (as long as it's, uh, good),' writes Kyle Wagner of Deadspin. 'Don't worry that LeBron was pretty terrible on SNL, and is probably a god-awful actor when stretched to feature length; Mike was pretty bad, too.'
Wagner goes on to bring up a few highly relevant questions, including whether or not LeBron's box score will be more or less impressive than Jordan's. Come on, you know that's going to get analyzed when this sure-to-be-epic film is eventually released.
But I have a few queries of my own.
Whose talents will the Monstars steal, assuming the plot is largely similar to the original storyline? It was Charles Barkley, Muggsy Bogues, Shawn Bradley, Patrick Ewing and Larry Johnson the first time around, but it would be pretty lame if the alien team was filled with retired players.
Here's hoping we get to see LeBron leading the charge against the extraterrestrial versions of Kevin Durant, Carmelo Anthony, Stephen Curry, Anthony Davis and James Harden (you know you want to see a bearded alien).
Will R. Kelly be involved? Will Bill Murray be featured again? Will LeBron's headband be stolen, and will he poke fun at himself by flirting with the idea of taking his talents to the Monstars?
Perhaps most importantly, is Jordan going to make a cameo appearance?
Come to think of it, none of that really matters. No matter what, Space Jam 2 is going to be pure, unabashed greatness.
It's still a travesty that the original only has a 6.1 rating on IMDB. Here's hoping the new one somehow tops that.
