Idris Elba fans have been given their first taste of what to expect from forthcoming biopic Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, in which the actor takes on his most significant role to date as the iconic South African leader.

In a short teaser the British born star is seen from a distance walking across a sprawling plain while reciting a brief but powerful off-screen narrative in the voice of Mandela.

"I have walked the long road to freedom," he narrates. "It has been a lonely road and it is not over yet. No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin. People learn to hate. They can be taught to love. For love comes more naturally to the human heart."

Inspiring: Idris Elba will play Nelson Mandela in forthcoming film Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom (Pathe/20th Century Fox)

The film - based on the South African leader's 1994 biography Long Walk to Freedom - has been made with the full support of Mandela, the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory.

Directed by BAFTA-winner Justin Chadwick, it will chart his life from humble beginnings in a rural village, lengthy imprisonment and eventual inauguration as the first democratically elected leader of South Africa.

Co-star: Naomie Harris will play Winnie Mandela in the new film (Pathe/20th Century Fox)

Mandela will also star Naomie Harris - Miss Moneypenny in last year's Skyfall - as Winnie Mandela.

It also marks the first time Elba has taken a major film lead following a string of roles in films such as Prometheus, Thor and current release Pacific Rim, as well as memorable TV roles in The Wire and Luther.

Mandela will be released at cinemas in the UK and Ireland on January 3, 2014.
