So the New York Rangers are pretty popular at this point in time in their city. Twenty years is a long time, just don't tell that to Toronto, or St. Louis, or Philadelphia, or we'll stop there. Even if it hasn't been as long as some, it's been long enough, so naturally fans are clamoring for a chance to see their team play for the big silver cup.
So yes, the tickets for the Rangers' Stanley Cup Final appearance are going to be hot items, regardless if they play the Chicago Blackhawks or Los Angeles Kings. But it might be even hotter than you imagine. The tickets haven't even gone on sale yet, but early pricing for the secondary market is already looking pretty steep.
Travis Hughes over at SBNation already did some digging on StubHub, and these prices will make your wallet hurt just looking at them:
For Game 3 on June 9, secondary market listings on StubHub start at $1,143.30 for a 400 level seat behind the goal. You'll pay at least double that price, probably triple or more, if you want to sit in the lower level. Prices for Game 3 top out on StubHub at $21,003 for a seat in section 214. That's the price for one (1) ticket.
Prices are pretty similar for Game 4 on June 11, starting at $1,147.01 and topping out at $26,253 for a seat in the Platinum Club, right behind the net the Rangers defend twice, basically at ice level.
According to Hughes, there are 94 listings on the site for tickets priced at $10,000 or more for Game 6, which would be a potential Cup clinching game. That Platimum Club ticket would be nearly $30,000 as well. Insanity.
According to Jesse Lawrence of Forbes, this Cup Final ticket market is reaching near-Super Bowl levels. And ticket market website TiqIQ is saying the prices for MSG Stanley Cup tickets are going to be the most expensive in five years.

With a 2-2-1-1-1 playoff format, Games 3, 4 and 6 will be held at Madison Square Garden. The average price for each of those games on the secondary market is currently above $2,000 and rises for each game. Game 3 has an average price of $2,202.72, Game 4 has an average of $2,419.57 and Game 6 is the most expensive with an average of $2,737.35, which is a game that would only occur if necessary. Overall, the series has an average price of $2,439.85, which is easily the most expensive for any team in the past five years of the Stanley Cup Finals. The only team that has previously exceeded a $2,000 series average is the Vancouver Canucks, with an average price of $2,055.83 in their series with the Boston Bruins in 2011.
At its current price, a Game 6 at Madison Square Garden would be more expensive than the final prices of the most recent Super Bowl. This year's Super Bowl between the Denver Broncos and the Seattle Seahawks at Metlife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ had an average ticket price of $2,567 and a get-in price of $1,514 on the day of the game.
Lawrence also reports that even the cheapest tickets will sell for near $1,000. The Stanley Cup is apparently really good for business. It's probably not the best for the blue-collar fans that want to witness the game live as much as the next person.
These prices are obviously going to freeze out a lot of folks, but to see this level of interest in hockey in New York is incredibly encouraging for the Rangers and the NHL as a whole. This could be an extraordinary Cup final, regardless of which team makes it from the Western Conference.
