EDMONTON - Parts of Alberta could see severe summer storms Thursday afternoon or evening.

Environment Canada issued severe thunderstorm watches for a large area spanning from the Rocky Mountain House area in west-central Alberta, all the way north to the Peace River region.

Thursday afternoon, some of the severe thunderstorm watches were upgraded to warnings.

'These storms can produce gusts in the 100 km/h range, quarter-size hail and heavy downpours,' said Global Edmonton meteorologist Nicola Crosbie.

Crosbie adds that a trough line is also forecast to move through the Edmonton area in the early evening.

'This will provide the trigger to generate some severe weather,' she explained.

'A 30-degree day like today, combined with higher-than-average dewpoints and a system coming through, we are at risk to see rotational storms.'

'It's always a good idea to have a storm plan in place for yourself and your family. Especially during the summer months in Alberta'

All of the warnings were dropped shortly before 9:30 p.m. By 10:15 p.m., Environment Canada had dropped all watches, as well.
