Another unexpected semi-final clash is scheduled to take place on Friday afternoon, as Canadian star Milos Raonic attempts to reach the first Grand Slam final of his career when he meets a 7-time champion in Roger Federer. This marks the fifth time these two competitors will cross paths on the professional tour but Raonic is yet to pick up his first win over the legendary opponent. Fourth seed Roger Federer kept his hopes alive for an eighth Wimbledon title on Wednesday afternoon when he rallied past an ailing Stan Wawrinka to reach the semi-final round. He defeated his fellow Swiss 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-4, 6-4 to remain in the running for an 18th Grand Slam title.
'I'm just really pleased that I'm back strong this year at Wimbledon,' said Federer, who suffered a shock second-round exit at the hands of Sergiy Stakhovsky in 2013. 'Last year was such a disappointment. I was very deflated leaving Wimbledon on that note. It's good to be back in the semis. The prospect is very exciting.
Looking ahead to his contest against Raonic, Federer is aware that the biggest aspect of the match will be determined through the tall Canadian's serve, which is never easy to handle.
'Here clearly on the grass with a serve like that it's never going to be an easy match [against Raonic],' said Federer. 'That's where you then sort of go back to your own game and say, 'I'll take care of my own serves and see what I can do on the return'. That's my mindset right now.'
Top ranked Canadian Milos Raonic continued to break national records back home as he rallied past rising star and giant slayer Nick Kyrgios in four sets to set up another meeting with one of Wimbledon's finest ever competitors. While the meeting was quite competitive early on, Kyrgios failed to win many points on Raonic's serve past the second set and that was when the tide turned dramatically.
'It hasn't really sunk in,' said Raonic to BBC television. 'It's great to have that kind of a win, especially at a tournament I've always wanted to play so well at and haven't been able to in recent years. It's another step forward. My goal is to be the best player in the world. This is a step to keep getting better and get the successes that I dreamed of. To do it on such a big stage is really special.'
While Raonic has looked spectacular over the past fortnight, he will need more than his serve to secure a win against one of the Wimbledon greats. Federer is in fine form and will be motivated to prove that he is still a top competitor. He may have a slow start but as long as he can find his range he will trouble the Canadian for the majority of the contest. Prediction: Roger Federer in Four Sets
