Static-X frontman Wayne Static died late Saturday night, according to a statement tweeted out by his publicity team.
The singer, known for his signature vertical hairdo and aggressive performance style, was set to begin a tour with Powerman 5000 and Drowning Pool in the next few months, including a European leg of the tour announced Oct. 31. No cause of death has been given.
Many in the metal community have taken to Twitter to express their condolences:
I am shocked to hear that Wayne Wells (Wayne Static) has passed away. I played with him in his first band, Deep Blue Dream, in 1987/88- Billy Corgan (@Billy) November 2, 2014
Static, aka Wayne Richard Wells, formed the industrial and nu-metal band Static-X in Los Angeles in the 1990s, playing a mixed genre that Static referred to as 'evil disco.' The band's first album, Wisconsin Death Trip, catapulted the group to fame and was certified platinum in 2001.
The band released several more albums together before separating in 2010, leading Static to release a solo album, Pighammer, in 2011. Static attempted to re-form Static-X in 2012, though none of his bandmates were willing to return to the project, and the group split for good in 2013.
