Disturbing social media threats had people fearful in Louisville Friday night.

A teenager created a flier about the 'Louisville Purge.'

The flier circulated on Twitter and Facebook.

The 'purge' refers to a popular movie in which all crime is legal for 24 hours.

Police said there were no serious threats of violence but they increased patrols in downtown Louisville after a string of attacks in March.

The hype led to the Louisville St. Xavier-Simon Kenton high school football scrimmage being moved from Louisville to Simon Kenton and changed from Friday to Saturday night.

'We always have to err on the side of caution in these types of events. Unfortunately, we can never take a risk or a gamble when we are talking about the safety of our students,' said Jessica Dykes with Simon Kenton High School told WLWT's sister station WLKY.

Still police said they were not taking any chances with the threats of violence.

'There is some social media activity going on out there making some boasts and promises that we hope are just some silliness on the web, but with that said, we have contingency plans in place,' a Louisville police officer said.

#LouisvillePurge was trending on Twitter as users tweeted erroneous reports of crime.

Rumors of a purge, or purge nights incidents also took place in Detroit, Kansas City, Jacksonville, Miami and Cleveland.
