Hours after a distributed denial of service attack brought down the PlayStation Network on Sunday, Sony has announced that the network is back online, adding that there is no evidence of any personal data having been accessed.

Rather, the attack was designed to simply flood the network with artificial traffic, bringing it to a standstill.

A group calling themselves Lizard Squad has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Stranger still, Lizard Squad was also responsible for a bomb scare on a flight carrying Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley, bringing the FBI into the mix. The plane was diverted and llanded safely.

The Lizard Squad Twitter account appears to be trolling the internet with claims of taking Vatican City offline and insinuations that Xbox Live is the next target.

This transforms a relatively harmless-if annoying-cyber attack into something far more serious and ugly.

For now Sony is back up and running.

The company says that regularly scheduled maintenance on the PSN will be delayed due to the attack.

'The PlayStation Network and Sony Entertainment Network are back online and people can now enjoy the services on their PlayStation devices,' the company said in a blog post. 'The networks were taken offline due to a distributed denial of service attack. We have seen no evidence of any intrusion to the network and no evidence of any unauthorized access to users' personal information.

'In light of today's issue, the networks will not undergo the regularly scheduled maintenance, which was planned for Monday, August 25. We will provide an update shortly for when the maintenance will be rescheduled.

'We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused by this issue. Thanks for your patience and support.'

Sony faced a similar attack in 2011, though that attack brought the PSN down for 24 days and resulted in hackers gaining access to personal information of Sony users.
