The prerace favorite, California Chrome went off at 5-2. Ridden by Victor Espinoza, Chrome made a winner of trainer Art Sherman. At 77, he became the oldest trainer of a winner in Derby history.

Taking charge at the top of the lane, California Chrome and jockey Victor Espinoza make a decisive move and quickly sprinted clear.

It was the second Derby win for Espinoza, who rode War Emblem to victory in 2002.

'I thought he rode him perfect. I never gave him any instructions. I just said, 'You know this horse, go for it,'' Sherman said.

California Chrome had an ideal trip in the 19-horse field at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. Espinoza had him sitting comfortably in third as Uncle Sigh and Chitu set the pace.

California Chrome made his move on the final turn in tandem with Samraat. It looked like those two would decide the outcome, until California Chrome found another gear and sped away, winning by 1¾ lengths.

California Chrome's owners, Steve Coburn and Perry Martin, are no Kentucky blue bloods. They're a couple of working stiffs who live near Reno, Nevada.

A trainer called them 'dumb asses' for getting into the racing game, inspiring the duo to put the letters DAP on their silks, which stands for Dumb Ass Partners.

'We're going to go down in history,' Coburn said.

California Chrome is the product of an $8,000 mare and a $2,500 stallion. He's earned more than $1 million already, making it somewhat easier for Coburn and Martin to turn down a pre-Derby offer of $6 million for a 51 percent stake in the horse.

'We've been blessed with this colt,' Coburn said. 'The first time we saw him, we knew it was going to be something special.'

Espinoza was thrilled to have won The Run for the Roses for the second time in his career.

'I never dreamt of winning two Kentucky Derbies in my entire career,' Espinoza said.

'It's an awesome feeling and when I work hard, everything comes along.' Undercard

Two-time Horse of the Year Wise Dan won the $500,000 Grade 1 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic for the second consecutive year Saturday at Churchill Downs.

The 7-year-old gelding, trained by Charlie LoPresti and ridden by John Velazquez, edged Seek Again by a neck, running 1 1/8 miles in 1:47.73.

Wise Dan, a son of Wiseman's Ferry, paid $3. He has won 12 of his last 13 races and is 21 of 29 for his career. He is 13 of 14 on turf and 4 for 4 at Churchill Downs.

Also on the Derby undercard:

Midnight Lucky returned from an 11-month layoff to post a 4½-length victory over Street Girl in the $330,600 Grade 1 Humana Distaff.

Ridden by Kentucky Oaks-winning jockey Rosie Napravnik for trainer Bob Baffert, Midnight Lucky went gate to wire and finished the seven-length test in 1:22.23. Midnight Lucky paid $5.20.

After the race, Baffert said the long term goal for Midnight Lucky is the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint.

Global View rallied to catch Storming Inti just in time in the Grade 2 $294,500 American Turf. Global View, trained by Tom Proctor and ridden by Gary Stevens, ran 1 1/16 miles on the firm course in 1:41.65 and paid $14. It was the third American Turf victory for Stevens, who won with Demier Croise in 1998 and Unanimous Vote in 1995.

'He's got a powerful, powerful kick,' Stevens said. 'I think he's going to be a top, top turf horse.' Quotient was third.

In the $336,900 Churchill Distaff Turf Mile, Coffee Clique and jockey Javier Castellano rallied up the rail to overtake Dame Maria for a half-length win in the Grade 2 race. Coffee Clique, trained by Brian Lynch, finished the mile in 1:34.66 and paid $13.80.

'My horse is very brave,' Castellano said. 'Turning for home, she split horses and kept on the rail.'

Central Banker, with Corey Nakatani aboard, pulled away from a tenacious Shakin It Up after a stretch duel to win the $464,800 Grade 2 Churchill Downs Stakes for trainer Al Stall, Jr. Central Banker paid $23.60.
