' The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ″ is living up to the hype with an impressive $92 million opening weekend in the U.S., according to Friday estimates.
Sony's tentpole - the fifth version of the durable Marvel character - appeared headed for a Friday launch in the $33 million to $36 million range. That figure included $8.7 million in latenight showings Thursday, down 15% from the first Thursday night for Disney-Marvel's ' Captain America: The Winter Soldier.'
'The Amazing Spider-Man 2″ looks likely to hold well on Saturday with $33 million to $34 million, thanks to strong tracking among younger moviegoers, with an add on of about $23 million on Sunday.
Added up, Sony should wind up with an 'Amazing Spider-Man 2″ weekend gross that is slightly less than the $95 million opening for 'The Winter Soldier,' which launched a month ago during the heart of spring break for many moviegoers. It should also finish well above Disney-Marvel's 'Thor: The Dark World,' which launched in November with an $85.7 million opening weekend.
The tentpole has already taken in an impressive overseas gross of more than $155 million in two weeks with new markets performing robustly - especially with China launching on Sunday.
Brazil opened Thursday $3.2 million, the third biggest opening day for that market and 121% ahead of 2012′s 'Amazing Spider-Man' while France was up 30% on its Wednesday launch with $2.7 million, plus a $2 million Thursday.
India saw the biggest opening day for a U.S. title with $2 million as did Malaysia with $1.5 million, 98% ahead of 'The Amazing Spider-Man.'
The latenight Thursday launch for 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2″ took place at approximately 3,000 locations before expanding Friday to 4,324, of which 353 are IMAX.
The robust early results should provide reassurance to Hollywood that Spider-Man still carries a strong appeal at multiplexes and that audiences are primed for summer tentpole fare now that month of May has arrived.
Sony's original 'Spider-Man,' starring Toby Maguire, opened domestically to $114.8 million in three days after its bow on May 3, 2002, and 'Spider-Man 3″ grossed $151 million in its opening weekend in 2007.
'The Amazing Spider-Man' grossed more than $750 million worldwide as Sony revamped the franchise with Andrew Garfield in the lead and Emma Stone as the love interest. That film opened mid-week prior to the July Fourth weekend and took in $137 million in its first six days in the U.S.
Fox's second weekend of 'The Other Woman' should lead the rest of the pack after taking in $33 million its first week. Friday forecasts showed a 45% decline for the comedy to between $13 million and $14 million for the weekend.
Sony's third frame of 'Heaven Is for Real' should see a similar decline for around $8 million, lifting the religious drama to an impressive $65 million U.S. cume.
The fourth frame of 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' shoule continue to show some staying power with around $7 million to $8 million, lifting the domestic cume to around $237 million.
