Rory McIlroy is back in front at a major championship, trying to take the 36-hole lead as the weekend approaches in Louisville.

Rory McIlroy is playing under the same soggy conditions in Friday's second round as his whiny playing partner, Bubba Watson, but the world No. 1 prefers to let his game do the talking while the two-time Masters champion bitches and moans his way around Valhalla.

Water on the face of the club, mud on the ball from the heavy rains drenching the PGA Championship venue? Such things are driving the touchy Watson to distraction while McIlroy blocks out the Bubba blather and calmly proceeds to can a couple birdies and an eagle while his playing partner hones his woe-is-me carping.

One would never know it, considering the non-stop complaining emanating from the increasingly wearisome Watson, but McIlroy made the turn just one stroke better than baby Bubba for the day (3-under to 2-under). After rolling in a 30-foot eagle putt on the 18th hole (their ninth of the day) while Watson made bogey, though, McIlroy appeared poised to run away from the field (eagle GIF via Kyle Porter/CBS)

McIlroy, going for his fourth major title and third-straight win this season, made the turn at 8-under, good enough for a two-shot edge over hard-charging Steve Stricker (5-under through 13) and overnight co-leaders Ryan Palmer, Lee Westwood, and Kevin Chappell. A bogey on No. 2, though, dropped Rory back a shot but that hasn't slowed his march to the 36-hole lead, with no one else making a real move behind him in good scoring conditions.

Rory is on a mission, he is playing simply incredible golf at the moment. Need to find a gear to step it up. - Ian Poulter (@IanJamesPoulter) August 8, 2014

Plenty of golf left to play, but maybe not for Bubba. With the projected cut line and Watson at even-par after a bogey on Nos. 10 and 12, Watson may be gone by the weekend.

Here's a snapshot of the leaderboard with the Bubba-Rory group navigating their second nine:
