TORONTO - The best of South America is taking on the best of Europe as Argentina and Germany get ready to play in the World Cup final.

Both teams are coming off big semifinal wins, with Argentina edging the Netherlands in penalty kicks and Germany's humiliating 7-1 victory over host country Brazil. READ MORE: World Cup ends today but questions ahead for Brazil's Olympic challenge

Argentina will be led by the planet's best player Lionel Messi, who is hoping to further cement his name among the all-time football greats.

Meanwhile, Germany considered to be the tournament's strongest all around team are hoping to raise the trophy after finishing in the top three at the World Cup over the last decade.

The German squad will be led by goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, considered the best goalie of the tournament, and upfront by Miroslav Klose who broke all-time World Cup scoring record, and Thomas Muller who is in contention to win the 'Golden Boot' scoring award.

The two teams share a long history with Argentina losing to West Germany in the 1990 World Cup final. Four years earlier, Diego Maradona led the Argentine squad to victory also against Germany.

Yesterday, the Netherlands furthered the frustrations of Brazil beating them 3-0 in the third-place match, which ended with a chorus of boos showering down on the host country.

Brazil's complete collapse in the final two games came as a surprise to football watchers, as they had been heavy favourites coming into the tournament. In its last two games Brazil conceded 10 goals, while only scoring one.

A number of VIPs are expected at the final and include: screen stars Daniel Craig and Ashton Kutcher, NBA star Lebron James, President Vladimir Putin of Russia (the next World Cup host in 2018), German Chancellor Angela Merkel along with other world leaders.
