'Modern Family' star Sarah Hyland has obtained a domestic-violence temporary restraining order against ex-boyfriend and fellow actor Matt Prokop after she said he was physically and verbally abusive.
On Tuesday, Prokop, her boyfriend of four years, was ordered to keep 100 yards away from the actress, her home, her workplace and her dog, named Barkley Bixby. A hearing is set for Oct. 10, news reports say.
'The documents filed speak for themselves,' attorney Lee A. Sherman said in a statement. 'Out of respect for the court, the process and all parties, I have advised Ms. Hyland not to comment on the matter. We request that you respect the parties' privacy during this time.'
In the documents, which were obtained by TMZ, Hyland, 23, testified to a number of incidents of alleged abuse. She said that in May, Prokop, 24, pinned her against her car.
'He placed both of his hands around my throat and began to choke me,' she wrote. 'His grip was so tight that I could not breathe or speak. I was scared and in fear for my life.'
Hyland said she suffered injuries to her voice and had a 'very sore throat following this event.' She said she didn't report it to police because Prokop said he would never do it again, the Associated Press reported.
Hyland alleged such abuse occurred throughout the relationship.
The two met in 2008 during an audition for 'High School Musical 3: Senior Year.' In 2011, they costarred in the TV movie 'Geek Charming.' Later, they moved in together with the maltipoo (Barkley Bixby) that Prokop gave to Hyland.
In 2012, Prokop appeared with Hyland appeared in one episode of 'Modern Family.
Their breakup was announced Aug. 26 when an unnamed source told Us Weekly, 'They decided they would be better off as friends.'
Hyland wrote in the court filings that following the breakup, Prokop 'relentlessly bombarded me with vile, threatening and emotionally disturbing texts and voice mails including his own suicide threats.'
Hyland said she had been trying to end the abusive relationship for several weeks and ultimately asked 'Modern Family' mom Julie Bowen for help. Allegedly, Bowen went to Hyland's home Aug. 16, and when Prokop saw her, he started screaming and threw a lighter at Hyland. Later that day, he allegedly went to a house Hyland is building and threatened to drive through the garage door and set it ablaze. He also threatened to hurt the dog, Hyland wrote.
Prokop allegedly made comments that his ex-girlfriend should suffer so much that she would kill herself.
Prokop reportedly went to a rehab facility the next day.
TMZ reported that Prokop got out of rehab on Sunday and that Hyland claims the director of the facility contacted her and advised her to get a restraining order because of his mental state and attitude toward her.
A receptionist for Prokop's agent Tyler Grasham declined comment to the AP on the allegations. Prokop is not facing any criminal charges.
