Europe's Ryder Cup captain, Paul McGinley, has placed Rory McIlroy in the anchor position for the first session of this year's event at Gleneagles.

McIlroy and Sergio García will take on Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley in the stand-out - and final - match in the Friday morning fourballs.

As anticipated, McIlroy's previous partnership with Graeme McDowell has been split up.

The Ryder Cup will get underway with Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson taking on the European duo of Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson.

In perhaps the most surprising selection by McGinley, Martin Kaymer will partner Thomas Bjorn. They face Rickie Fowler and Jimmy Walker in match two.

The penultimate clash will see Ian Poulter and Stephen Gallacher take on two debutants; Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed. Lee Westwood, Jamie Donaldson, Victor Dubuisson and McDowell will therefore sit out the first fourball session.

Tom Watson, the United States captain, has left out Jim Furyk, Matt Kuchar, Hunter Mahan and Jimmy Walker until Friday afternoon at least. ends How they line up Friday morning fourballs
