Corvus: Kiefer Sutherland declares the Games open

It's not just the ancient Roman city that gets burned to the ground here - careers are also convincingly incinerated by Paul WS Anderson's pitiful excuse for a historical disaster movie.

As big budget calamities go, we're in Pearl Harbor territory with this one.

Kit Harington (Jon Snow in TV's Game Of Thrones) is a British slave turned gladiator who arrives in the doomed city in 79AD to fight the reigning champion (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje).

There he falls for a doe-eyed posh girl (Emily Browning) who's being bullied into marriage by a slimy senator (Kiefer Sutherland, whose beyond-awful accent makes him sound like Vincent Price).

The 3D effects aren't bad but the film's over-reliance on clichés, painful dialogue and dumb character interaction robs it of all dramatic tension.

Crucially, it's also very hard to care about any of the characters or their fates. The central love story, meanwhile, is third-rate schmaltz. Pompeii 3D, certificate 12A, running time 104 mins
