'The Normal Heart' was nominated for 16 Emmys, but only walked away with two awards - one being for outstanding non-prosthetic makeup in a miniseries or movie. Although they received the top honor with Best TV Movie, HBO's film was one of the biggest upsets of the night.
HBO enlisted A-list stars for its emotional television movie, The Normal Heart, but not even Julia Roberts could lead the show to multiple Emmy wins - and fan backlash proves that it certainly was not her fault. Do you think that Julia and the cast deserved to go home with more golden trophies? 'The Normal Heart': Biggest Snub At The Emmys?
The Normal Heart won for Best Television Movie at the 2014 Primetime Emmys on August 25, 2014, but regardless of the top honor, the film's lack of awards was one of the biggest upsets of the night.
Ryan Murphy's impactful film adaptation of Larry Kramer's Tony Award-winning play of the same name explores to rise of the HIV-AIDS crisis in New York City during the early '80s, but not even the important focus of the film could push The Normal Heart to the top Emmy ranks.
Mark Ruffalo, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or Movie nominee, lost out to Benedict Cumberbatch from Sherlock. Benedict was not there to accept his award, which was presented by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson who were also seen to be snubbed in the Best Actor in a Drama category, in the eyes of many True Detective fans. (But, well deserved, Bryan Cranston!)
Julia Roberts was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Movie, but lost to Kathy Bates who won for American Horror Story: Coven. Best Comedy Actor winner Jim Parsons , Joe Mantello , Alfred Molina and were all nominated in the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or Movie category, but all lost to Sherlock's Martin Freeman.
Take Our Poll 'The Normal Heart' Wins Best TV Movie At 2014 Emmys
Despite the upsets, The Normal Heart did win for Best TV Movie.
Director Ryan Murphy ( Glee and American Horror Story) rose above the snubs, and delivered one of the night's most beautiful speeches with AIDS activist and playwright Larry by his side.
'After 30 years, it took the super powers of Erin Brockovich and The Hulk to get this thing alive,' Ryan said to the star-studded audience, giving a nod to Julia and Mark who had lost out on their awards. 'We're gonna use the rest of our time to ask the young people watching to become Larry Kramers, to find a cause you believe in that you will fight for, that you will die for.'
After thanking HBO, Ryan dedicated the award to the cause. 'This is for all of the hundreds of thousands of artists who passed from HIV AIDs in 1981. Your memory and your passion burns on in us and this is for them.'
The Normal Heart also won for Outstanding Makeup for a Miniseries or a Movie (Non-Prosthetic).
