Kesha has filed a lawsuit against her longtime music producer Dr. Luke - claiming he has sexually, physically, verbally and emotionally abused her - and she has no plans to back down.

'We are prepared to fight until he agrees to get out of her life once and for all,' her lawyer Mark Geragos tells PEOPLE.

Geragos explains that the alleged abuse had been going on for years, but that Kesha, 27, did not come to a point in her life that she felt ready to take legal action until recently.

'She's made efforts, [but] she is not a confrontational person,' he said. 'The efforts were always met with psychological warfare, [predatory behavior] and things of that ilk. She finally got to a place where she is surrounded by people that are supportive enough that she felt like she could finally do it, and felt like she needed to do it. She just couldn't go on this way. Getting out of the contract is really secondary to extricating herself from his control.'

Despite having dealt with personal issues in the past - including checking into rehab for an eating disorder in January - Geragos believes his client is well enough to handle what filing a lawsuit such as this entails.

'I have spent quite a bit of time with her recently and I would say her mindset is as good as I have seen it,' said Geragos. 'Obviously nobody wants to get embroiled in litigation and making things public like this, but she understands she has to take a stand. I applaud her bravery for speaking to a broader societal issue of domestic violence. This speaks to an untold story in this industry and society at large.'

Geragos believes Dr. Luke's alleged abuse is unfortunately a common occurrence in the music world.

'It's emblematic of what happens in this industry,' he said. 'You get these guys who end up preying on these young women, tying them up in contracts and in their power plays, and then literally being predators. [Dr. Luke] is nothing but a predator.'

As for why Dr. Luke would even want to remain in a contract with Kesha after she has come forth with these abuse allegations, Geragos explained that it's 'a money and power issue.'

'He's got more money than anyone could need in a lifetime, and it's about power, which is always the case in these predatory-type situations. He's decided that he is going to destroy her, and that's been his mission.'

Dr. Luke has denied all of Kesha's abuse allegations, and has filed a countersuit against Kesha and her mother for breach of contract and defamation.

'Kesha and her mother are engaged in a campaign of publishing outrageous and untrue statements about Dr. Luke to third parties, including scurrilous and false statements of purported physical and mental abuse of Kesha,' his lawyer Christine Lepera said in a statement to PEOPLE. 'Kesha and her mother Pebe have wielded these defamatory statements in an attempt to extort [him] into releasing Kesha from her exclusive recording agreement with Dr. Luke.'
