Wes Welker insists his Kentucky Derby wasn't so decadent and depraved as suggested by a Pro Football Talk report, which on Tuesday accused the NFL receiver of taking the drug MDMA while at Churchill Downs.

Welker, who was suspended for the first four games of the season by the NFL, officially tested positive for an amphetamine, resulting in a one-strike penalty.

The Denver Post reported that a source said Adderall flagged the positive test, while a subsequent Pro Football Talk update said Welker's Derby Day MDMA - colloquially referred to as Molly - was cut with amphetamines.

Regardless, 'I wouldn't have any idea where to get a Molly or what a Molly is,' Welker told The Post in a lengthy email in which he also denied taking any performance-enhancing substances. 'That's a joke. I don't do marijuana, I don't do drugs. I don't do any drugs.'

The Post said Welker left open the possibility that someone could have put something in his drink at Churchill Downs.

Of course, Welker's trip to the 2014 Derby will be remembered for the $14,000 tote error to 'an individual believed to be a member of Wes Welker's group,' Churchill Downs spokesman Darren Rogers said at the time.

The 33-year-old Welker, who walked out of the track handing hundred-dollar bills to strangers, asked the money be re-paid. Welker told talk show host Dan Patrick he had no plans to do so.

'People wanted autographs and pictures and stuff coming down,' he said on Patrick's show in May, 'and I was like, 'Wouldn't $100 be nicer?''

The Broncos star, whose career took off during his days with the New England Patriots, suffered a preseason concussion and was already questionable for his team's opening game against the Indianapolis Colts.

'I'm as shocked as everyone at todays news,' Welker's email, as quoted by The Post, reads. 'I want to make one thing abundantly clear: I would NEVER knowingly take a substance to gain a competitive advantage in any way.

'...I have never been concerned with the league's performance enhancing or drug abuse policies because under no scenario would they ever apply to me, but I now know, that (drug-policy procedures) are clearly flawed, and I will do everything in my power to ensure they are corrected, so other individuals and teams aren't negatively affected so rashly like this.'

Welker's Derby Day payout was $57,193.90 instead of his actual due: $42,295.38. Churchill Downs, under Kentucky statutes, is responsible.

It wasn't the NFL receiver's first day at the races. He owns a number of horses, including Undrafted, who won a June 7 race on the Belmont Stakes undercard. Jonathan Lintner can be reached at (502) 582-4199. Follow him on Twitter @JonathanLintner.
