Manchester United secured a 1-1 draw against holders Bayern Munich in their Champions League quarter-final first-leg match at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

Nemanja Vidic gave United the lead in the 58th minute with an excellent header but the German champions levelled nine minutes later as a superbly worked move saw Bastian Schweinsteiger prod the ball home for his fourth goal in the past six games.

However, the German midfielder's evening ended on a sour note as he was sent off for a second bookable offence in the 90th minute when his sliding challenge saw him connect with Wayne Rooney and not the ball.

United can travel for the second leg next Wednesday encouraged by the fact that Bayern have failed to beat the last four English clubs to play them in Munich, including meetings with Manchester City and Arsenal earlier this season. AFP
