Ted's kids Find out how he met their mother on the series finale Of How I Met Your Mother. (Picture: CBS)
So now we know. After nine years, 39 women (yes, only 39), one goat, one slutty pumpkin and five slaps, Ted Mosby finally finished telling his story and How I Met Your Mother drew to a close.
We already knew whose face was standing under that yellow umbrella but there were plenty of questions still left unanswered before the finale aired last night. And boy, did we get answers.
Yes, it was legendary, but not in a good way. It's enough to make us watch all nine seasons again, just to put everything into perspective and decide how we actually feel. We're that confused. But what we do know is that we didn't like it. Warning: this article contains How I Met Your Mother season nine and finale spoilers
If you've managed to hold out this long without Googling what happened last night, then well done.
But if you do know what happened, then you're probably going through a whole heap of emotions right now: confusion, anger, happiness, despair and most of all, confusion. Did we already say that one? Was killing the Mother the right decision?
The killing-off of the show's titular character feels like one final middle finger to all those who criticised the show for being too romanticised, too slushy and too, well, cheesy.
In a previous episode, Ted broke down when the Mother asked him 'what kind of mother isn't at her daughter's wedding?' so many predicted this would happen. But it seemed too far-fetched. A conspiracy theory so crazy that even Marshall Eriksen wouldn't have believed it, designed to throw us off the scent. A twist-too-far. Yep. It happened. (Picture: CBS)
Cristin Milioti (the actress who played the Mother) even went as far as to say that killing her off would be 'insane'.
But this was a show based completely on one story, and the punch-line to that story had to be big. The fact that they had the guts to do the one thing we really didn't want proves this show still has an edge.
It was just a heart-breaking edge. So Ted was in love with Robin all along? Really?
Ted was supposed to love this Mother more than anyone else. Yes, she died and yes, that is real-life. If the finale had stopped there, leaving Ted to move on to another woman who loved him just the way he is, we could have lived with that. It would have been heart-wrenching, but not annoying.
But now we know he was in love with Robin all along. The whole time he was with the Mother - the mother to his children, 'the one' and the person who gave him everything he's been working towards for nine years - he was in love with someone else. Kind of takes the edge off, doesn't it? Was the Ted-and-Robin thing a cop-out?
The writers have known for a long time who the Mother was, and what happened to her. They knew that we knew that Robin wasn't 'the one' Ted was searching for. So they made damn sure to throw us off the scent again.
Robin and Barney made sense: they were essentially the same person. Ted and Robin didn't have that. The only reason they seem like they should be together is because they started the show: they were the Ross and Rachel of How I Met Your Mother. Robin and Barney made sense - so why break them? (Picture: CBS)
Ted himself has given plenty of reasons why Robin wasn't right for him. She didn't make him feel needed; he's sentimental and she's unromantic; oh, and she's been saying for years that she doesn't love him.
But the writers knew that a lot of fans still wanted Robin and Ted to end up together. So it does feel as though they've given us this one: 'Yep, you were right all along guys. Robin was the love of Ted's life all along - well, kind of.' And they were determined to shoe-horn the storyline to that conclusion, even at the expense of a rational plot. And Barney still hasn't changed?
Barney is still a gross stereotype, incapable of ever growing up. Marrying Robin was supposed to have made a better man of him and, crucially, it gave him some depth and character. After divorcing her three years later, he resorts back to lame sexual challenges. In an ironic twist of fate, he ends up with a daughter who will probably have the same 'daddy issues' that he took advantage of during the show's nine-year run.
That was the most disappointing thing about the HIMYM finale: the show that made us feel that true love really is possible, even if it takes a while, ended up making us feel like we'd been 'had' in one of Barney's Playbook stunts.
Not so legen... wait for it...
