Comedian Stephen Colbert will succeed David Letterman as host of The Late Show, CBS has reportedly confirmed.

Colbert, who has hosted The Colbert Report on Comedy Central since 2005, will step in to the Late Show role in 2015, when Letterman retires. The long-time late night host announced his retirement from The Late Show on April 3, after 31 years (and counting) behind the desk.

'Stephen Colbert is one of the most inventive and respected forces on television,' Leslie Moonves, chief executive of CBS, said in a statement on Thursday. 'David Letterman's legacy and accomplishments are an incredible source of pride for all of us here, and today's announcement speaks to our commitment of upholding what he established for CBS in late night.'

Colbert has hosted the White House Correspondents Dinner and has earned two Peabody Awards and four Emmys for his work on The Colbert Report.

'Simply being a guest on David Letterman's show has been a highlight of my career,' Colbert, 49, said in a statement. 'I never dreamed that I would follow in his footsteps, though everyone in late night follows Dave's lead.' More to come ...
