As reported by the Huffington Post's Michael Calderone, CNN has removed reporter Diana Magnay from covering the hostilities between Israel and Hamas after she sent out a controversial tweet. The tweet, which she has deleted, read like this:
Magnay was stationed on a hill near the Israel-Gaza border. A CNN spokeswoman told Calderone that 'After being threatened and harassed before and during a liveshot, Diana reacted angrily on Twitter. She deeply regrets the language used, which was aimed directly at those who had been targeting our crew. She certainly meant no offense to anyone beyond that group, and she and CNN apologize for any offense that may have been taken.'
During her report, Magnay essentially narrated the flight of Israeli missiles heading into Gaza, and as the munitions made their way in the air, cheering could be heard on the audio. Magnay explained: 'The sound that you are hearing here...There are lots of Israelis gathered around who are cheering when they see these kinds of Israeli strikes and it is an astonishing, macabre and awful thing, really, to watch this display of fire in the air.'
She's now headed to Moscow. A CNN spokeswoman didn't respond to a question from the Erik Wemple Blog whether the move to Moscow was a direct result of the tweet.
Leaving the term 'scum' off of her tweet might have enabled Magnay's followers to reach their own conclusions about the behavior of those folks on the hill. In the encyclopedia of journalistic missteps on social media, this is a small entry.
