TORONTO - A video of what is alleged to be a shark found in Lake Ontario is making the rounds on social media and has some residents in the area concerned for their safety.
The video, filmed just off Wolfe Island near Kingston, Ont., was posted on YouTube July 10 and shows several people fishing on a deck when a creature suddenly pops out of the water.
An enhanced close-up image of the sighting reveals a fish with a sharp nose and teeth.
The video has reportedly sparked a rumour that a bull shark is indeed lurking near the waters of Lake Ontario and has even spooked employees at a local restaurant on the island.
Waitress Erin Whalen tells the National Post she has seen the creature near the docks and vows not to let her children near the water.
According to a profile on National Geographic's website, Bull sharks generally grow to about 7.5 feet long and weigh up to 285 pounds.
While bull sharks are commonly found along coastlines, bays, and harbors, they are also known to frequent at times, although rare, freshwater rivers.
'Bull sharks have special physiological adaptations that enable them to live in fresh water,' wrote National Geographic on its website. 'Their kidneys recycle the salt within their bodies and special glands, located near their tails, also aid in salt retention.'
Despite the odds of its existence, the speculation of a shark in Lake Ontario has at least created a buzz around Wolfe Island and also spawned its own Twitter account.
