The Rockets have made their first move towards securing cap space for Chris Bosh, sending Jeremy Lin to the Lakers.
Well, that was quick. Literally four minutes after we posted this, the deal was done. Jeremy Lin will be a Los Angeles Laker as the Lakers have agreed to a deal for the Rockets point guard. Adrian Wojnarowski was the first to report the news.
Here's what Woj had to say:
Houston is finalizing a deal to send Jeremy Lin to the Lakers, league source tells Yahoo Sports. - Adrian Wojnarowski (@WojYahooNBA) July 11, 2014
With this move, the Rockets have cleared their first hurdle towards clearing near-max cap space to offer to Chris Bosh and get him signed in time to also match the Chandler Parsons offer sheet. The Rockets will be attaching a sweetener to Lin in order to compensate the Lakers.
The Rockets get a boatload of cap room and the Lakers get a global icon, one of the most marketable players in the NBA. How he will learn to coexist with Kobe will be an interesting question, but he will now have a chance to excel in a bigger role that his fans have been looking for for the last two years.
As for Lin, he was nothing but a professional and competitor for the last two seasons. His fans give him a bad rap, but he was an excellent teammate and his calming influence in the locker room will be missed.
