Musician David Brockie, who fronted metal group Gwar under the alias Oderus Urungus, has died, according to a report in Style Weekly, a publication based in Richmond, Va., where Brockie lived. The Canadian-born musician was 50 years old at the time of his death.

Police were reportedly called to the singer's residence shortly before 7 p.m. on Sunday, where they found the musician's body. According to Style Weekly, foul play is not suspected.

'He was a criminally underrated lyricist and hard rock vocalist, one of the best, ever,' Gwar bassist Mike Bishop reportedly told Style Weekly. 'A great front man, a great painter, writer, he was also a hell of a bass guitarist. I loved him. He was capable of great empathy and had a real sense of justice.'

Fans of Gwar flocked to the group's official Facebook page to pay their respects to the singer. 'Your music is eternal in the metal world,' one such fan wrote. 'No one will forget what you did for us metal heads.'

Brockie was born on Aug. 30, 1963 in Ottawa. He formed satirical metal group Gwar, known for its theatric performances and intricate mythology, in 1984 in Richmond.

Gwar had been preparing to perform at its annual GWAR-B-Q, a charity performance benefitting the Ring Dog Rescue in Richmond, this Saturday. The band has not yet released an official statement on Brockie's death.
