We see the seniors graduate and bid a final goodbye to the glee club on Glee season 5, episode 13, 'New Directions.' Check out our recap as well as the promo for next week's episode.
The episode starts off with Sue interrupting Holly and April's game of 'Kill, Marry or Bone' in order to hang out with her new best friend, Holly. Apparently Holly and Sue have been secret best friends and are auditioning for The Amazing Race together, though it's all in an attempt to bring the glee club back. Her efforts work, somewhat, and the substitute teacher convinces Sue to start including music into other extracurricular activities because it is proven to increase test scores.
After the opening credits, we find out that Blaine got accepted into school in New York and will officially be making the move to the East Coast. In all of the group's excitement, Sam accidentally hits Tina in the head with a glee club trophy. Tina gets knocked out and there is a hilarious dream sequence about the gang all living together in New York. If only Tina could get into a college then the Friends-like sitcom, aptly titles Chums, could become a reality.
In an extremely subtle attempt to bring Rachel and Santana back together, Kurt and Mercedes tell a story about their fight over tots in the cafeteria. While it was intense they were able to persevere and overcome it since their friendship was what mattered. They then burst into 'I Am Changing' from Dream Girls and seem to move everyone in the room except for Santana.
The song does bring some emotions out in Rachel, who confronts Santana in the bathroom. She wants to completely bury the hatchet and tells Santana she will give her 10 shows after the first three months as a peace offering. Santana wants nothing to do with it and says she won't rest until she has the part for herself.
At Animal Husbandry Club, Holly dresses up as Temple Grandin (why is this happening?) and leads the club in a disco-inspired routine of 'Party All The Time' by Eddie Murphy. However, instead of doing any good it just offends parents leading Sue to put an end to all and any of Holly's attempts to bring the glee back to life. This scene, besides being offensive, didn't do much to add to the plot and we wish there had been another song in there sung by the kids instead.
As a huge romantic gesture, Brittany sets up a garden of lilies, the 'lesbians of flowers,' for Santana in the choir room as well as got two tickets to 'Lesbos Island.' Santana admits that she doesn't want to run away with Brittany but at the same time doesn't tell her 'no' to a relationship either.
Brittany also recognizes that Santana isn't following what's true to herself and Broadway isn't her dream, it's Rachel's. Santana doesn't give any answers regarding either Brittany or Rachel, but it's obvious she needs to think things over.
Tina continues to get rejected from schools and in an effort to cheer her up, all of the seniors sing a slowed-down version of 'Loser Like Me' together which is pretty amazing. How does anyone else feel about this rendition? Are you digging it as much as we are?
While Rachel is practicing Funny Girl lines in the auditorium, Santana decides to finally apologize and to tell her that she quit the show. Consider these girls officially made up because the pair goes on to sing a really fun version 'Be Okay' by Oh Honey.
After Rachel and Santana, it's Quinn and Puck's turn to sing. They choose 'Just Give Me a Reason' by Pink, which is definitely a cute moment but seems like it would have made more sense in last week's episode when they got back together. They admit their love in front of the entire club and Will says that that was the last song to ever be sung in glee club.
The day is almost over when Will finds an invitation on his desk that directs him to the auditorium for a 'glee club meeting.' What he finds is a truly touching and adorable video from all of the glee club to Will and Emma's future child. The video ends and the club members come out singing 'Don't Stop Believing' by Journey which ends up as a giant song and dance party on the stage. It was a fitting tribute for the glee club to officially end on the first song they sang together as a team.
It's graduation time and we get to see the original glee club receive their diplomas from McKinley and it's a graduation full of surprises. It's here that Tina tells her friends the big news that she got into Brown University and Santana decides to surprise Brittany by helping her officially graduate from high school. Oh yeah, and she invites Brittany to come live in New York with her. It seems like Brittana may officially be back together and maybe this time it's for good.
The episode is almost over and Will and Sue sit together on the lone piano bench in a very empty choir room. They have a nice moment together as friends and Sue reveals that she got Will an interview as the coach of Vocal Adrenaline.
Will's decision is left up in the air as Sue walks out, leaving the teacher in his room for the last time. The audience can hear the voices of all of his former students speaking about what the glee club has meant to them and Will gives one final bow and shuts off the lights for good.
