The last time any of us saw the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on the big screen, it was in the critically panned lackluster 2007 showing TMNT. So upcoming summer blockbuster Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is already riding a strong wave of anticipation - and if the film's first trailer, released Thursday, is any clue, the film could very well satisfy.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is produced by Transformers helmsman Michael Bay and directed by Jonathan Liebsman, the South African director behind Wrath of the Titans and Battle: Los Angeles. No stranger to high-octane action sequences - or CGI - Liebsman's Ninja Turtles appearing in Thursday's teaser clip only briefly, but when they do, they display their trademark teenage wit, a quality that was all but absent from their 2007 showing.

It's a Michael Bay-esque trailer, to be sure, with long shots of falling buildings, rushing soldiers and Bay's Transformers star Megan Fox, who plays April O'Neil (in her trademark yellow jacket, to boot). Bay had originally planned to cast the turtles as a group of aliens, going off-script from the original TMNT storyline, which is, basically, four actual turtles are coated with radioactive goo and trained by a rat to become ninjas. It's unclear how closely the upcoming film will stick to this storyline - in fact, the trailer doesn't reveal much at all, outside of what everything (and everyone, including the menacing Splinter) looks like.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles hits theatres on Aug. 8. Watch the first trailer for the film below.
