Rumours that Emma Watson is being cast in a new live-action remake of The Little Mermaid could be a hoax.
Harry Potter fansite Mugglenet started the rumour last year as an April Fools joke.
Speculation has been rife that Emma could be cast as Ariel since Sofia Coppola was hired to direct the remake. The pair previously worked together on The Bling Ring.
Mugglenet joked last year: 'Emma was seen leaving an aquatics facility this past weekend in Los Angeles. We can only assume that this means she has started training for her role as Ariel. Yes, training. Sofia Coppola has been hired to direct the live-action remake (Picture: Invision/AP)
'As this is a live-action film, Emma must take on several aquatic disciplines including SCUBA-diving, synchronised swimming, and diving.'
After Coppola was announced as director on The Little Mermaid, whispers soon started to spread that Watson was her top choice for the lead while Daniel Radcliffe was even rumoured to be up for the role of Prince Eric.
A source told The Sun: 'Sofia wants Emma, and the pair have such a respect for each other it would be very surprising if they carry on without each other.
'Movie companies Universal and Working Title want to move quickly on this so expect an announcement soon.' MORE: JK Rowling: Hermione Granger should have ended up with Harry Potter
