The Arrow mid-season 3 finale, 'The Climb,' ended with a major shocker. We look at the evidence and consider who might be coming back in the new year.Warning: This post contains major spoilers from Arrow season 3, episode 9, 'The Climb.'
At the end of the Arrow mid-season 3 finale, Oliver Queen faced off against Ra's al Ghul in a trial by combat. But despite Oliver's formidable skills, he was no match for the Demon's Head - and the match ended with Ra's choking and stabbing Oliver before kicking him off a cliff.
With Oliver's life flashing before his eyes, it sure does seem like Arrow killed off its main character - which star Stephen Amell seemed to confirm on Twitter:
It was a good run.

Of course, it's highly unlikely the death will stick. But the question then becomes how the show, which has mostly stayed away from the supernatural and superpowers up until this point, will resurrect its titular hero.
It's worth pointing out that Ra's told Oliver that it had been 67 years since he was last challenged to combat. Since Ra's doesn't look like he should be collecting Social Security, it's pretty safe to assume he confirmed the existence of a pretty major piece of DC lore: The Lazarus Pit.
What's a Lazarus Pit? According to the DC Wiki, it's 'a natural phenomenon that possesses restorative properties that instantly heals injuries and even grant[s] immortality.'
Also notable? After the success of the Flash/ Arrow crossover, executive producer Marc Guggenheim acknowledged the possibility of bringing superpowers to Arrow: 'What's fun about episode 8 for Arrow is it proved to me, as a writer and a producer, hey, you know what? You can do metahumans on Arrow without feeling like the show is changing its tone too much.' He added, 'It's something that we all sort of collectively realized - hey, the show can handle that. So that's kind of cool.'
A Lazarus Pit doesn't seem much of a stretch from metahumans...
Hm. Who returns?
But Oliver is not the only character who we can expect a comeback from in 2015. Arrow season 3, episode 14 will be titled 'The Return.' However, according to Guggenheim, the title does not refer to the obvious:
I probably should mention that the title of Arrow Ep. 3×14 - 'The Return' - does NOT refer to Oliver. Or Slade Wilson. #speculate
- Marc Guggenheim (@mguggenheim) December 11, 2014
Note: We learned earlier that Slade Wilson, aka Deathstroke, would be returning in the new year.
However, if the titular return does not refer to either of these two men, who could it be? Well, two main theories seem to be going around.
First is Tommy Merlyn, Oliver's late best friend. Amell even posted a picture of him and Colin Donnell together, indicating the latter would be appearing again. (Donnell appeared as Tommy in a flashback earlier this season as well.)
However, it seems unlikely Amell would spoil a big return like that - or that that the producers would let a major spoiler like that stay posted if it were true, considering their penchant for shocking audiences at every turn. It seems more likely that Tommy will be appearing in another flashback and his 'return' is a red herring.
So if it's not Tommy, then who else could it be?Another theory floating around is Sara Lance.
When we return from winter hiatus, we'll be greeted with a trilogy of Black Canary-centric episodes. It seems likely that news of Oliver's death will be what prompts Laurel to suit up as Black Canary.
After episodes 10, 11, and 12, Arrow season 3, episode 13 - the episode prior to 'The Return' - will be titled 'Canaries' and feature, you guessed it, Caity Lotz.
Interestingly, the previously linked DC Wiki entry notes that Ra's is not the only one to use a Lazarus Pit in the comics; Nyssa and - wait for it - Black Canary have also used it.
Though Sara's death propelled Laurel's storyline earlier this season, her resurrection could do the same. After all, Laurel coming to terms with why she fights if her reason for revenge - honoring Sara's memory - has been taken from her would be compelling. Not to mention, it would draw another parallel between her and Oliver, who took on his fight against Ra's to protect his own sister. Arrow returns with new episodes on Wednesday, January 21 at 8:00 p.m. ET on The CW. Who do you think will return on 'Arrow' in 2015?
