There has been a puzzling outbreak of mumps in the NHL, concentrated in the Western Conference but affecting at least one team in the East's Metropolitan Division - where the Pittsburgh Penguins play.

So Sidney Crosby raised a few eyebrows when he met with the media looking like this:

One of the symptoms of mumps is 'painful swelling of one or both salivary glands (located within your cheek, near your jaw line, below your ears).' It looks an awful lot like how Crosby looked on Friday.

Crosby also missed Thursday's practice because he was sick. But the Penguins captain said whatever is going on with his face is not mumps-related:

After cameras were turned off, Sidney Crosby noted that if had the mumps he would not be at the arena getting ready to play. #Penguins

Crosby's coach also said there's no reason to worry the Penguins star is the latest player affected by the mumps outbreak. Via the Sporting News:

Coach Mike Johnston said the team as a whole had bloodwork done because of the mumps outbreak, and that Pittsburgh's medical staff, when clearing Crosby to play, 'didn't mention anything like that.'

There are plenty of other possible explanations for Crosby's swelling, including dental work or a puck to the face.
