Florida Panthers forward Shawn Matthias is a player that will not let an opportunity go to waste and as some of the players got injured, he stepped up to replace them and is showing just how much talent the underdog packs.

It hasn't happened this only once. Last season was the same, where injuries to the starters and key players allowed the lesser known players to rise from the ranks and display the amazing sense of game that they had but did not get many chances to show practically. And Matthias is not letting this one go to waste. He is giving the best performance that he can. The Panthers have also to deal with their rookie center Aleksander Barkov, who is also out of the game due to sustaining an injury to the knee while participating in the Olympics.

Panthers winger Scottie Upshall said that now that Matthias had the chance to prove his game in front of his teammates, franchise and fans, he was doing his best and was faring quite well on the ice. On Sunday he was received an assist from Matthias to net a goal to win the match against the Islanders 5-3.

'Now, where he's getting some limelight on him with Barkov out, he's a big solid skater who's really showing his ability lately,' he said. 'We need him to be a big player down the stretch. I like the way he can play on any line and bring energy.'

Matthias agreed that some things were similar to last year as the key players had sustained injuries and the rookies had to step in to play in their place.

'I think it's the same thing as last year,' Matthias said. 'There are some injuries to key guys and it gives chances for some other guys to step up.'
