Julia Roberts may have managed to put a brave face on things as she arrived to Sunday's Oscars.

But behind the Hollywood smile, the 46-year-old actress was clearly still feeling fragile in the wake of the recent suicide of her half-sister Nancy Motes.

Bette Midler's epic performance of Wind Beneath My Wings, following the In Memoriam segment, proved to be a powerful emotional trigger for Roberts at this year's Academy Awards.

The star, who was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of a daughter meshed into the toxic heart of a dysfunctional family in August: Osage County, reportedly shed tears while listening to the Beaches ballad in the lounge.

'This song always makes me cry, but I'm just overwhelmed with emotions this month,' Julia told a group of her peers, which included her agent, Cate Blanchett and her husband Andrew Upton, according to Us Weekly.

The Pretty Woman star caught a glimpse of the tearjerking performance from a monitor as she grabbed a drink.

'It's f----ing terrible. How many more people have to die?! It's awful,' Cate, 44 - who won Best Actress for her role in Blue Jasmine - echoed whilst clinking glasses with Julia.

Philip Seymour Hoffman and Sarah Jones were other losses that the group touched upon.

According to the insider, Andrew chimed in with a brief mention of Motes, who passed less than a month ago.

Though he was quick to apologize to the teary-eyed star, she insisted that she wasnt't offended in the least, reports the eyewitness.

The spotlight turned on Julia and her family in the wake of Motes' death, amid claims of a troubled family relationship that drove Motes into a suicidal abyss.

From the moment that the August: Osage County star stepped on the red carpet, she certainly didn't seem to be herself, donning a suitably mournful black dress; smiling with that expressive mouth but telling a different story with her eyes.

It's been a horrendous month for Julia - with it also being reported that her mother Betty Lou is battling lung cancer - and the strain is clearly starting to show, with the actress looking much thinner of late.

It is possible the recent sad family events which she has been dealing with have taken their toll on her appetite.

The Oscar-winning actress' half-sister committed suicide almost on February 9 and was found dead in the bathtub of an LA home where she was pet-sitting by her fiancé John Dilbeck.

John Fraschetti, a friend of Nancy's grieving fiancé, Dilbeck, claimed her family are only interested in manipulating public opinion after her suicide, but during her life, 'drove her to death'.

Making the incendiary comments outside Nancy and Dilbeck's home, Fraschetti said that Nancy spiralled into depression after her and Roberts' mother, Betty Lou Motes, 'rejected' her six months ago - and that she 'just couldn't handle it anymore'.

Dilbeck himself then spoke to the Mail on Sunday in an interview published on Oscars Sunday.

He told how Nancy's relationship with Julia caused her to spiral into a depression from which she never recovered, and shared that suicide letter.

Nancy branded her sibling a 'bitch,' 'bully' and 'mean girl,' though Dilbeck admitted that the Pretty Woman star had been generous to her sister.

Ms Motes and Mr Dilbeck were due to marry on May 17.

Following Nancy's death and the revelations, Betty Lou was hospitalised.

It was later revealed that she is 'battling lung cancer'.

The National Enquirer reports Julia - who has twins Hazel and Finn and son Henry with husband Danny Moder - has been coping with the tragic news since doctors found a 'cancerous tumour' on Betty 's lung during a routine MRI scan in November. THE OSCARS 2014: WINNERS LIST
