Mortal Kombat X - a good game for fighting game newbies? The morning Inbox looks forward to Mass Effect 4 at Comic-Con, as one reader spots more Doctor Who video game 'inspiration'.To join in with the discussions yourself email gamecentral@ukmetro.co.uk

Always newbie Hearing about things like Evo 2014 really makes me wish I could play fighting games properly, but after many attempts over the years they just don't seem to click with me. I learn a few of the special moves, I play some matches (usually instantly forgetting all the moves I've just spent hours learning) and then get demoralised and sell the game.

I've tried Tekken many a time and so am not too bothered about another one, but would GC and readers say that Super Smash Bros. is a good one to start with? Is it even a fighting game? I'm not eve sure if that's what the kind of game it is.

Any other suggestions for a repeated newbie who wants to love the games but never seems to be able to get into them the way I think I should. Maybe if I start now I'll finally be ready for Street Fighter V when it comes out!Gibson2 GC: The argument over whether Smash Bros. is a fighting game or not could fill a whole other Internet, although the fact that it was at Evo makes it an open and shut case as far as we're concerned. It's certainly very different from other fighters, in terms of both controls and tactics, but it's still the same basic idea and it's very easy to learn how to play. In terms of other games most do now have a half decent tutorial and Mortal Kombat has always been particularly easy to pick up.

Bowled over You know if you'd asked me what Tekken we were on next I'm not sure I could've told you. I probably would've guessed more than seven actually, but I guess the lean years for the genre meant they had to stop pumping them out at one point. Still, the thought of an Unreal Engine 4 game sounds pretty neat. I remember when fighting games had the best graphics around (that whole period from Virtua Fighter to SoulCalibur really) because they were basically just two human figures and that's it.

I hope that Namco go all out to make this the best-looking fighting game ever and they aren't just using Unreal Engine as an excuse not to make any new technology of their own. That said I don't know what they can do to update the gameplay, but then as many have said that's kind of the problem with all fighting games.

As long as Tekken Bowl is in there though, I'll forgive a lot...Vita-Man

The more the merrier Super Smash Bros. (wish they'd give it a proper name) is looking amazing. Can't believe we're getting four Fire Emblem characters, and plenty of assists and trophies and everything! If Nintendo are going to be doing these Skylanders toys for the game then I'd be totally happy with buying them if they added in the new character as well. I don't really understand why they're not going that route.

I'm also a bit upset to find Rayman isn't in the game. Seems a bit weird to put him in as a trophy but not let you play as him. Although I imagine the relationship between Nintendo and Ubisoft has probably cooled a lot since the days of ZombiU and when Rayman Legends was supposed to be an exclusive.

Still, I'm all for jamming in as many more characters as possible: Solid Snake, the Dragon Ninja guys, Bionic Commando, James Bond, the Contra duo, basically anyone that's ever been prominent on a Nintendo console. I mean c'mon, it's not like they've ever had that many third party games! Am I right?!Sappy Day E-mail your comments to: gamecentral@ukmetro.co.uk

Future problems Thought GCers might find this interesting: it's basically an engineer at Valve quitting because he doesn't want anything to do with VR and thinks it will be a bad thing that makes gaming even more antisocial. I think he gets a bit carried away, and seems to hate even normal online gaming, but he does have some good points and I think a lot of people will agree with him.

It does certainly make it seem like there's only two possibilities: either VR's not good enough yet and most people will get bored after a while when it doesn't live up to their expectations or it'll be so amazing it'll basically bring Western civilisation to its knees.

Let's face it, when VR does work it's going to make people that constantly stare at their smartphones seem like the life of the party. Having not played any of the new headsets I'm not sure where I stand really but it does kind of excite me that we're basically having the same social problems now as Star Trek. We're living the future!Hammeriron

Doctor what RE: Doctor Who and video games. There was another episode that was incredibly similar to a video game. Spoiler alert! The Doctor Who episode '42′ sees David Tennant as the Doctor given a limited amount of time to save a mining ship being pulled into the sun. In the end it turns out there's life forms on the sun who weren't too pleased about the mining.

The obscure PlayStation title Sentient is about a medic who has a limited amount of time to save a mining station from being pulled into the sun. In the end it turns out there's lifeforms on the sun which aren't happy about being mined. Am I the only one who noticed that? That said the game sold about five copies so I doubt anyone actually played Sentient! Will GC: We've never seen that episode (we couldn't stand Tennant most of the time) but well remembered on Sentient, that was an impressively ambitious game back in the day.

Sequel response Apparently there's going to be a Mass Effect 4 panel at Comic-Con at the end of the month so I'm super hyped for that and hopeful that we'll get a proper trailer or some kind of concrete story information. With Dragon Age: Inquisition seeming to have learnt a lot of the lessons from its last game I'm very curious to see how BioWare are going to approach Mass Effect after all the craziness with the last one's ending.

As other Inboxers have said BioWare seems very reactionary, even insecure but considering all the main complaints about Mass Effect 3 were around the ending I'm not actually sure what they'll do about the rest of it now. My other problem was that a lot of plot threads went nowhere but again that's not going to be an issue for the start of a new trilogy.

It sounds like the planetary exploration is back so I hope they'll make it a bit more like a space trader, have you as a private individual rather than a g-man. Like Assassin's Creed IV but in a spaceship. What does everyone else think?Iceman

Kids today There is literally nothing I understand about the current fad with YouTube 'personalities'. I've tried to watch them but it's always some terrible manchild screeching at the camera as he tries desperately to prove he's got a personality and talent. They never seem to say anything remotely interesting about games and seem to have a very shallow understanding of them.

Apparently they're really big with teenagers, but even on that level I don't understand. Most of the videos are so long and boring. Surely in today's world it's almost impossible for a teenager to get bored, that they would have to resort to this as entertainment?

The worst thing of course though is more confirmation that they're all on the take. As if the drivel they spout wasn't bad enough they're now apparently being bribed to talk about specific games? Who can possibly take these clowns seriously? Oh... the millions that subscribe to them. I despair.Ashton Catch up on every previous Games Inbox here

Terminator Isolation Loving all the ideas for which '80s movie Creative Assembly should make a game out of after Alien Isolation. I think RoboCop is the most obvious one but I assume they couldn't get the licence because the film company would want it to be the stupid new remake. The Terminator seems the next best but I'd prefer it was set in the '80s, rather than always being the future war, and I'm not sure how that'd work really.

They could have it like Alien Isolation where there's only ever one big bad, but who would the other guys be? Maybe have one T-1000 always chasing you and other T-800s (the Arnies) so as to keep the action up? I'd really like to see it open world so you'll be trying to collect ingredients to make weapons, and maybe trying to figure out how to get into Cyberdyne. It'd be like a mixture of the two films.

Very unlikely I know but maybe the trick of movie tie-ins is to wait a few decades until the technology catches up.Pinky

Inbox also-rans I don't really mind Doctor Who being 'inspired' by games, but you'd think if these people cared that much they'd be able to make a decent Doctor Who game in return.Fallten

I miss Treasure, I wish Konami would pay them to make another Gradius. 'Cause I miss that too. If only I had a gaming PC to play Artebreed...Smiler

This week's Hot Topic The subject for this weekend's Inbox was suggested by reader Dominic, who asks what's your favourite smartphone or tablet game?

Whether iOS, Android, or Windows Phone it doesn't matter, and you can include versions of games that originated on consoles or elsewhere. You can even include a mini-review if you like (no longer than 100 words please) and a top three if you can't quite decide which is best.

But we also want to know what you think of mobile games in general and whether you play them a lot, only when other games are impossible, or not at all. The iPhone is seven years old this month, so what do you think of its legacy and influence on the games industry as a whole? E-mail your comments to: gamecentral@ukmetro.co.ukThe small printYou can also submit your own 500 to 600-word 4Player viewer features at any time, which if used will be shown in the next available weekend slot.If you need quick access to the GameCentral channel page please use www.metro.co.uk/games and don't forget to follow us on Twitter.New Inbox updates appear twice daily, every weekday morning and afternoon. Letters are used on merit and may be edited for length.
