Batchelor, an ex-Royal Navy submariner who has boosted sales by growing online and expanding in European markets, will leave the group in April.

The news sent Domino's shares tumbling 49p to 480p, reducing its stock market value to £830million.

Chairman Stephen Hemsley said: "Lance has been offered a new role in a private equity-backed company and as a result has tendered his resignation. We are sorry to be losing him and thank him for his contribution. We have begun the process to find a replacement."

Batchelor, appointed in 2011, did not comment.

Analysts said the move created more uncertainty after chief financial officer Lee Ginsberg recently said he would retire next year. Sean Wilkins has been hired as his replacement.

"Further senior management change is not good news," said Sahill Shan of N+1 Singer.

"Given some valid questions over the pace of UK expansion possibly slowing down it creates further uncertainty."
