In discussions found within the comments thread of yesterday's blog, a few readers debated a few possible trade scenarios with respect to the Calgary Flames and their captain, Mark Giordano.
Before anyone ruffles their feathers over this thought, let me be clear in saying that in light of the trade deadline, discussions like this is to be expected. And with that established, I was rather intrigued with how the conversation when about.
When discussing possible trades surrounding an arguably most important player to a rebuilding teams, it's likely that fans will view proposals differently. What I mean by this is that a player like Mark Giordano is very valuable to the Calgary Flames, in two different scenarios.
Scenario one - The Calgary Flames (as mentioned by Burke) regard Giordano as an untouchable and do not move him unless they are essentially offered the moon. Mark's value to the current team, his work ethic and ability to help mold and guide the teams developing youth is something that is very hard to replace.
During a press conference yesterday, when asked a very similar question, Burke responded with the following.
'I mean, Wayne Gretzky got traded, so how can you have untouchables? The closest we have are Sean Monahan and (Mark Giordano). Those would be the closest we have to untouchables.'
'When you're in the place where we are in the standings, your list of untouchables should be either non-existent or tiny.'
By moving their captain, the team risks not having the right mentors or vets within their roster in order to successfully develop and rebuild a winning organization. Without a player like him, who stats show clearly improve the performance of their group on the ice, the organization itself could very well take longer to rebuild. And while this is all speculation, it's really not out of the realm of possibility. If you've seen the commit level of this individual, you'd understand.
Scenario two - The Calgary Flames trade Giordano to a high bidder who is in desperate need for a strong defensive defenseman for their playoffs. Given Mark's cap hit of $4M, there would likely be a ton of teams interested in paying for his services, as not only could he be the missing piece to a contending team this year, but he has several years of hockey left in him as well.
With the current need for defensemen in the NHL right now, and the low number of quality players available, this could be an opportunity for Brian Burke and the Calgary Flames to really cash in from a team who has several promising young players. The question then becomes, how much would you give up to acquire Giordano for your cup run?
I'm interested to see what the rest of my readers would be willing to offer if Giordano were made to be available, or on the contrary, what it would take for Flames readers to accept!
Let's have it!

The Calgary Flames will be challenged against the Ottawa Senators tonight who are currently on a rather poor streak with just one win in their last four games played.
Sitting a few spots outside of a playoff berth, the Sens have been struggling to get things rolling in order to secure themselves into the postseason. With a current 5-4-1 record in their last ten, they haven't been playing horribly, but they also haven't been playing strong enough to surpass too many teams in the standings.
The Flames who themselves have been struggling to find wins have a slightly better record in their last ten games with one extra win over Ottawa. With a few players looking to be traded such as Mike Cammalleri and Lee Stempniak, they have been fighting a good fight to stay within games and give themselves every opportunity to win.
And while neither of the above mentioned players may play tonight, I wouldn't expect a whole lot to change with respect to this team's ethic. They have truly bought into their coaches systems and game plans, and have been working their tails off to show that they are not just another rebuilding team who can be walked on.
I do not personally expect too many line changes tonight, provided no big trades happen, and Hartley has stated that it will be Joni Ortio who will start between the pipes as Karri Ramo is still out, despite skating with the team of late.
That's all for today folks, thanks for reading and enjoy trade deadline day!
