DALLAS - Although all three judges ultimately got to the same score, one took a different route to award Johny Hendricks (16-2 MMA, 11-2 UFC) a five-round decision victory over Robbie Lawler (22-10 MMA, 7-4 UFC) in Saturday's UFC 171 headliner.
Hendricks earned 48-47 scores across the board, but judge Doug Crosby issued 10-8 and 10-10 rounds to get there.
The championship bout aired on pay-per-view from Dallas' American Airlines Center. Hendricks picked up a title recently vacated by longtime welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre with the victory.
Judges Aladin Martinez and Mike Gonzales both gave Hendricks 10-9 scores in the first, second and fifth rounds, and Lawler won the other two via 10-9 scores.
Crosby, meanwhile, issued Hendricks a 10-8 second round ( a rare occurrence), and he called the fifth round a draw with his 10-10 score.
