PARIS - Canada's Eugenie Bouchard was eliminated from the French Open on Thursday after dropping a 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 semi-final decision to Russia's Maria Sharapova.

After taking the first set, Bouchard dropped four of the first five games in the second set before attempting a comeback. Sharapova double-faulted on two set points but finally pulled level in the match by converting her fifth set point.

Bouchard was broken in the fourth game of the deciding set as unforced errors became more of a factor. The Canadian misfired on a volley at the net as the seventh-seeded Sharapova held for 5-2.

The Russian eventually completed the victory in two hours 27 minutes.

The loss ended a 10-match winning streak on clay for Bouchard, who came to Paris after winning a warmup event in Germany. The 18th seed from Westmount, Que., also reached the semi-finals at the Australian Open earlier this year.

Bouchard and Carling Bassett-Seguso, who lost in the US Open semi-final in 1984, are the only Canadian singles players who have made the final four at a Grand Slam in the Open era.

Sharapova will play the winner of the late semi-final between Simona Halep of Romania and Andrea Petkovic of Germany. The final is scheduled for Saturday.

Sharapova, a four-time Grand Slam champion, owns a 3-0 career record over Bouchard. She beat the Wimbledon junior champion last year in Miami and in the second round at the 2013 French Open.
