UPDATE, SATURDAY 12:31 PM PT : After opening at No. 1 in China on Friday, Tom Cruise/Emily Blunt-starrer Edge Of Tomorrow added an estimated $9.6M on Saturday to bring its local cume to $16.56M. The screen count has been modified from yesterday's 4,000 to 6,272, or about a third of the available real estate. The two-day haul is nearly double what Cruise's Oblivion did in its first three days in China which went on to be that film's biggest non-U.S. territory last year at $23.7M. It's also a Friday-Saturday increase, something EOT experienced last weekend in several territories. In all, the Friday gross across 36 international markets was an estimated $19.3M, taking the total to $60.3M - that figure does not include the Saturday numbers from China. Next weekend, EOT will face competition from Godzilla in the Middle Kingdom, followed by Maleficent on June 20.

EOT is holding its No. 1 slot in Korea where it's a five-day holiday. A further $3.9M came from 801 dates on Friday for a cume of $9.6M. Russia saw gains with a further $2M on Friday. The No. 1 film there, it has a cume of $3.4M. France added $437K and Scandinavia $386K.

In the U.S., EOT is eyeing a $30M weekend and is expected at No. 3. Overseas, it's playing in a field that still includes X-Men: Days Of Future Past and Maleficent. New entries this week include 22 Jump Street in the UK and the Netherlands, and domestic hit The Fault In Our Stars entering 20 markets including Russia, Australia, Mexico, Brazil and South Africa. We'll have numbers on those match-ups tomorrow.

PREVIOUS, FRIDAY 2:17 PM PT: Edge of Tomorrow might have had a soft reception domestically in late-night Thursdays, but Tom Cruise is still a big international draw. The sci-fi actioner directed by Doug Liman, bowed in China and Russia to No. 1 and to a record-breaker for Cruise in Russia. Down Under, Fox's The which did gangbusters in its late-night bow stateside and is expected to easily capture the No. 1 spot this weekend domestically, ended up besting Edge of Tomorrow with $1.4M vs. $973K there.

But in Russia, the Warner Bros film marks the biggest opening ever for Cruise in that territory, beating MI:4 by a whopping 67% there. It nabbed $1.4M on more than 1,600 screens. Russia was the No. 2 market for Cruise's Oblivion, grossing a total of $19.2M there last year.

The film, which also stars Emily Blunt, grossed a total of $8M on Thursday, bringing its total international cume since bowing last weekend to $47.7M. China grabbed $6.7M from 4,000 runs, taking 57% of the market share there. The opening of the film exceeded Cruise's previous outing there ( Oblivion) by 150%. China was the No. 1 market for Oblivion, which ended up grossing $23.7M in the country when it opened there last year. The picture went on to gross $198.4M at the end of its international run.

In China, Edge of Tomorrow also bested such heavy hitters as Gravity by 46% and exceeded the opening day of the first Hobbit by more than 20%. The opening day is on par with the studio's last Harry Potter movie, which grossed $60M-plus, and is 4% higher than Sony's Men in Black 2, which went on top $80M. Those are the comps.

There is a 5-day holiday weekend in Korea, so box office there is expected to be stronger. So far, Edge of Tomorrow has grabbed $5.8M, with a Thursday take of $1.9M on 681 screens.

The actioner also opened as a strong No. 1 in the United Arab Emirates, with $410K on 81 screens, marking the second-biggest opening ever for Cruise. MI:4 remains the biggest, which is not surprising as it was partially filmed there and the World Premiere took place at the Dubai International Film Festival.
