PARIS - Rafael Nadal won his ninth French Open title Sunday and fifth in a row, defeating his longtime rival Novak Djokovic, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2, 6-4.

Nadal also retained the No. 1 ranking by beating the second-ranked Djokovic, who was seeking his first French Open title to complete a career Grand Slam.

Nadal has won 14 major championships, tying Pete Sampras for second on the career list. Nadal is now three behind Roger Federer's record for Grand Slam titles.

Nadal improved to 23-19 against Djokovic, winning their last four meetings at Grand Slam tournaments and all five of their matches at Roland Garros.
