The announcement was clearly an eagerly-anticipated event for hockey fans, including this one:
Is it bad that I woke up more excited for the #TeamCanada announcement than I did on Christmas morning? #Sochi2014Cody
Unfortunately for many viewers, the announcement took a long time to get to, thanks to a preamble that went on ... and on. And on.
I hope Cda's #Olympic men's hockey team isn't as slow-moving as the ceremony to announce its roster #TeamCanada #HockeyCanada #Sochi2014Emmett Shane
This hockey ceremony is worthy of Brezhnev-era USSR #tsn @sochi2014.Arjun Basu
This reminds me of wedding speaches.....can we just say thanks and congratulations and get to the reception? #teamcanadajason pankiw
Is this a wedding reception or a men's hockey Olympic roster announcement?!?! #cmon #TeamCanada @CDNOlympicTeamTyson L. W. Geick
More than a few people were questioning why a federal government cabinet minister really needed to be among the speakers.
Lisa Raitt? Seriously? Get the government OUT of my hockey. #TeamCanadaRenCat
The fact that a minister of labour -- and not the minister of state responsible for Sport Canada -- was speaking, added to the befuddlement for some:
Lisa Raitt emerges, presumably to list the flights currently delayed or cancelled at Pearson #teamcanada #worstannouncementeverScott Reid
Eventually, finally, the speeches ended, and Team Canada General Manager Steve Yzerman began announcing the team.
En dehors du dossier PK/Price... couple of surprises ! #teamcanada #sochi #subban #price #pressure http://t.co/zmAgG7jID8M. Sperandio-Lemay
While there was no surprise that stars and past Olympic gold medallists like Sidney Crosby and Jonathan Toews were chosen, there was no shortage of indignation that certain sharpshooters -- notably Claude Giroux and Martin St. Louis, not to mention Eric Stall, Joe Thornton, Tyler Seguin and [insert your favourite player who wasn't picked here] -- failed to crack the lineup.
I don't think I need to tweet out too many stats to justify the fact that leaving Giroux and or MSL of #TeamCanada is preposterous.Simplified Stats
Well I guess someone has to get snubbed, but Joe Thornton - 48 pts & Martin St. Louis - 38 pts #TeamCanadaChris Burdge
Man, Yzerman talked for a looong time in the scrum about leaving Martin St. Louis off #TeamCanada. Musta been tough.Charlie Gillis
Many couldn't fathom how Pittsburgh Penguins forward, and Sidney Crosby linemate, Chris Kunitz made the cut.
love the team except Sidney Crosby water boy Chris Kunitz #overatted #TeamCanada #betterchoicesLegendaryCanuckFan
Those Chris Kunitz Team Canada jerseys are gonna fly off the shelves. #sarcasm #TeamCanadaMP
And much was made over the fact that Tampa Bay Lightning star Steven Stamkos was named to the team - even though he's still recovering from a broken leg.
It's official! Steve Stamkos with a broken leg is still better than most other Canadian NHL players. #TeamCanadaKyle Radke
Rick Nash (concussion) and Steve Stamkos (broken leg) both named to Team Canada. I mean, we hope for recovery, but we shouldn't RELY on it.Gordon Bird
Yzerman on Stamkos: "If he's healthy, he's one of the 25 best players in Canada and should be on the team." Status uncertain. #TeamCanadaAndrea Janus
But in the end, can Team Canada really ice a 'bad' team? Some fans came to the conclusion that the team could take several incarnations and make the country proud in Sochi.
Even though there's some surprising omissions, this hockey team is crazy good. #GoCanada #Sochi2014 #TSNDagger McAwesome
Team Canada could have like 5 different hockey teams and they'd all be good #Sochi2014 #TeamCanada #goforgoldLogan Bullee
To prove the point, fans like Dustin Rogers even posted a "Team B": an impressive roster of players who didn't make the cut.
Olympic Team Canada "B" picks #nhl #sochi2014 What do you think? @robdickinsonAB http://t.co/Cw78EFI3KNDustin Rogers
