Outdoor Remembrance Day ceremonies will soldier on in the face of bitter wintery foe, their organizers said Monday.

A late-morning temperature of -16C is expected to be driven down to a windchill of -25C, just as those paying tribute to Canada's war sacrifices gather, said Jennifer Hay of Environment Canada.

'It's not going to be very nice - the windchill will be most extreme in the morning,' she said.

But general winter will force no retreat at what's become the city's largest Remembrance Day service, at The Military Museums, said spokesman Stephen Magusiak.

'We've come up against weather like this in the past,' he said.

'We're going to tough it out and see what the attendance numbers are.' CALGARY REMEMBERS: A SUN SPECIAL REPORT

About 10,000 people traditionally attend the service at the museum, which will be open free for the public on Tuesday, with a donation to the Veterans Food Bank recommended.

'People are encouraged to warm up inside,' said Magusiak.

The Calgary Highlanders might trade in their kilts for trousers for their parade at the Cenotaph at Central Memorial Park, said Capt. Jason Leek.

'We're looking at what the dress will be - it might be cold weather gear,' said Leek. WHERE ARE THE EVENTS?

Those organizing the outdoor ceremony at the Field of Crosses on Memorial Dr. will also defy the elements, said Dave Howard of the Legacy Project.

'It doesn't seem to matter what the weather is at the Field of Crosses,' said Howard.

The past week of Remembrance activities in Calgary, he said, has been heartening.

'It's been an amazing response to the food drive and other events - Calgarians are really rallying behind it,' he said.

'Sadly, that spirit only happens this week and mostly tomorrow.'

Despite two fatal attacks on Canadian soldiers last month in Ottawa and Quebec, city police say they won't be stepping up their presence at the local events.

Most of the ceremonies begin at around 10:30 or 10:45 a.m. bill.kaufmann@sunmedia.ca
