She's still regarded as one of the most iconic actresses in Hollywood history more than 50 years after her death.

And while stars including Michelle Williams and Naomi Watts have taken on the challenge of portraying her in recent years, it seems that it's now Kerry Katona's turn to step into the shoes of Marilyn Monroe.

The reality star has just been announced as the lead role in forthcoming show Norma Jeane The Musical, tweeting the news for all her followers on Monday.

The 32-year-old pop star, who's recently announced her bankruptcy, is all set to take to the stage as one of the world's most famous screen legends.

Although Kerry is not best known for her acting skills, it seems that director Belvedere Pashun, who recently opened WAG! The Musical in the West End, has picked the former Atomic Kitten for this latest project.

The mother-of-four has a lot on her plate, what with her forthcoming wedding, her financial problems and an imminent child access battle with ex-husband Mark Croft.

But the star seems to be taking it all on the chin and had thrown herself back into work, setting her sights on the ambitious new project.

'I'm thrilled to have been given this opportunity to play one of the world's biggest female icons and can't wait to get to work,' said Kerry.

'A successful career in drama has always been a main goal of mine and this role is a challenge but one I'm going to grab with both hands,' she added.

Writer Pashun, who recently cast Lizzie Cundy in the lead role of WAG! The Musical, said: 'I needed an actor of huge talent, personality and experience - Kerry was at the top of my list.

'This show will change the shape of people's perceptions of Marilyn Monroe and we expect to announce a new star of drama on stage and screen with Kerry's performance.'

And it seems that this new production aims to delve into the more personal side of the screen icon, as producer Karen Struel-White, said:

'The script isn't an ordinary Bio - Drama and Belvedere has taken a new route into the personal history of Marilyn based on little known facts from her life.'

The show's original songs have been penned by writing team including Jay Aston, Geoff Cotton Orna Klement & Tony Bayliss.

The star will soon be starting rehearsals ahead of an invite-only preview of the musical to an industry audience on September 22.
