False alarm! Nov. 9 was a scary day for Celine fans, who were scrambling for information after false reports of the iconic singer's death took Facebook by storm.
For a brief moment, many people thought iconic singer Celine Dion had died. The 45-year-old pop star was the latest victim of a celebrity death hoax on Nov. 9, and not surprisingly, she is not very happy about it. Celine Dion: Death Hoax Victim
Fake stories about the singer's death began circulating and building steam on Facebook through an app that uses logos from well-known news outlets to entice users to click, according to 7News. One story said that Celine died in a car crash, while another claimed it was a plane crash.
And huge news like Celine's death - no matter how fake - has a tendency to spread like wildfire on social media. After starting on Facebook, the hoax leaked onto Twitter:

The fake news spread so fast that it even reached Celine - who was very much alive - and she was shaken and upset.
"Sometimes it's freaky because I have to call my family about it," she told Digital Spy. "I was celebrating the birthday of my twins in Montreal and I was getting these phone calls saying there was stuff on Facebook that I was dead."
When Celine puts it that way, it really outlines how damaging death hoaxes can actually be. Maybe we should all just agree to take a step back and stop the madness. But is it too soon to make a "her heart will go on" joke? Celine Dion - "My Heart Will Go On"
