SASKATOON - The first day of November also means the first day of Movember. Men of all ages take part in what has become an annual monthly campaign to raise money and awareness for prostate cancer.
"Movember is about getting one more man to talk openly about his health and take action when he needs it, so 247,000 mo bros last year, lets hope we can get a few more growing mustaches," said Pete Bombaci, Movember Canada Country Director.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in Canadian men and is the second largest cause of male cancer deaths. In Saskatchewan, 650 men are expected to be diagnosed this year.
"There's no single cause for prostate cancer but we know that the risk of developing prostate cancer increases with age, so certainly we say if you're 50, you should talk to your doctor but if you have a family history of prostate cancer think about testing earlier," said Donna Pasiechnik, Canadian Cancer Society Saskatchewan.
Ten years ago, two Australian guys started Movember, it's grown internationally with Canadians raising $42.6 million in seven years.
Even provincial politicians are getting in on the warm lip cozies.
Last year Saskatchewan man, Reed Ludwig, put the province on the Mo-map raising the most money for prostate cancer research in the world at over $96,000. Can a Saskatchewan man do it again this year? We'll find out in 30 days.
