Bad idea, Kat. Cosmetics store Sephora has pulled one color of Kat Von D's lipstick from their shelves following backlash over the product's name, "Celebutard."
"It has come to our attention that the name of one shade of lipstick we carry has caused offense to some of our clients and others," Sephora said in a statement to CTV News on Wednesday, Nov. 6. Over the past week, several blogs and Change.org petitions have been demanding that the "Celebutard" lipstick from the 31-year-old tattoo artist's Painted Love Lipstick line be removed, arguing that the name references the word "retard." PHOTOS: Stars without makeup
Faith Bodnar of Inclusion BC, a non-profit that helps people with developmental disabilities, told CTV News, "It should have never been on the shelves to begin with. It's degrading and there's no place for it."
Glee actress Lauren Potter, who has Down syndrome, also spoke out on Twitter about the lipstick. The 23-year-old actress wrote on Nov. 5, "Really @sephora celebutard? Not cool." PHOTOS: Celebs with bad skin
Kat Von D seemed unapologetic about the moniker, tweeting Nov. 2, "That name was inspired by the silliness of people who become famous for no reason outside attention seeking behavior. I think it's a funny, lighthearted stab at how silly people can be. (Both the celebrity and those who subscribe to them.)" She also added, "At the end of the day, it's just a f--kin lipstick."
