Still alive: Macaulay Culkin. Photo: Instagram/Cheesedayz

Macaulay Culkin is very much alive, but he had to take to social media to remind everyone after rumours he was dead spread over the weekend.

A fake Facebook memorial page was set up on November 6, according to Snopes, claiming the Home Alone star had died.

The hoaxers wrote on the fake memorial page:

Death rumours: Child star Macaulay Culkin has tweeted about death rumours that spread on the internet over the weekend. Photo: Pizza Underground/Twitter

'At about 11am ET on Friday (November 7, 2014), our beloved actor Macaulay Culkin passed away. Macaulay Culkin was born on August 26, 1980 in New York. He will be missed but not forgotten. Please show your sympathy and condolences by commenting on and liking this page.'

The page was taken down shortly after, but not before it had fooled hundreds of thousands of people into thinking the 34-year-old was dead.

'Woke up and I'm completely shocked and saddened to find out Macaulay Culkin is still alive. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family,' wrote one irreverent Twitter user.

'Macauley Culkin has passed away, this can't be true. He made my childhood,' wrote another.

Lucky for fans this rumour was quickly stamped out by the star's representatives and the man himself.

Culkin's representatives released a statement over the weekend to confirm the star was in fact still alive.

'He joins the long list of celebrities who have been victimised by this hoax. He's still alive and well, stop believing what you see on the internet,' said his representatives.

Culkin, who plays in a band called the Pizza Underground, decided to address the rumours in a more lighthearted manner.

A photograph posted on the band's Instagram shows a smiling Culkin holding a bottle of soft drink, captioned 'We're on tour you silly people'.

Clearly having some fun with the hoax, the band posted a number of images to remind fans that Culkin is definitely still alive and playing in a Velvet Underground parody band.

A group photo of the band, including a live Culkin, was captioned 'One of the great things you can do when you're alive is stop for lunch in Breaux Bridge, LA'.

In another photograph Culkin recreated a famous scene from Weekend at Bernies. It was captioned with the hashtag 'imalive' just in case people started to think he was dead again.

While Culkin might have thought the whole hoo-haa was fairly humorous, apparently his fans don't agree.

According to a poll of 1400 people by the Celebrity Post, 85 per cent of their audience think Culkin death rumours aren't funny anymore.

Other fans just want the internet to stop killing celebrities.

'Why does the internet love to randomly kill celebrities. What did Macaulay Culkin ever do to you?' wrote one person on Twitter.

Another user wrote: 'Internet, could we please stop killing Macaulay Culkin? thank you'.
